The All New, All Different X-Men (1975)

The All New, All Different X-Men 110 (Claremont and Tony DeZuniga with Dave Cockrum)

Very much an odd issue, this one. Almost certainly a fill issue (an issue put together to cover a delay in the output from the regular creative team, but an indication that Claremont was starting to work ahead of himself as he wrote the story).

Someone is out to get the X-Men and they have cured a man named Warhawk from his own insanity. In return he has to infiltrate the X-Mansion and overcome the X-Men. From there on it is a simple attack as he overpowers the various characters one after another. The X-Men slowly learn what they are up again, and fight back as a team rather than individuals and overcome Warhawk. The realise that someone else was behind it, but realise they will have to face that hurdle another day.

Weapon Alpha was originally a creation of John Byrne, from his school days no less.

We seem to come into the story halfway through, with the Beast (now in his blue furry form),

finding the X-Men working as Carnival (Circus) performers with no apparent memory of who or what they are. We learn that the Beast took a leave of absence from the Avengers and returned to the mansion to find it empty. He tracked the X-Men and was surprised by what he found.

Upon seeing Jean working as a trapeze artist he confronts her, but she does not seem to know anything, and when they are interrupted by her boyfriend, Slim (Cyclops) and they see what the Beast is, the whole Carny is turned out.

Beast makes a run for it, but is caught unawares by Colossus who nearly knocks him out, and as the Beast is overwhelmed he reaches for help, toward a stage where a half naked wildman, chained and feral threatens the crowd. It's Wolverine.

The Beast is dragged off where he finds that Mesmero is apparently behind this strange turn of events, twisting the X-Men's minds, and he sees the Beast as just another plaything...

On his stage Wolverine fights against his conditioning, at the core of his being his bestial nature is determined to be free, and beyond the conscious psyche it is enough to overcome the control of Mesmero. Despite the strength of the chains that hold him he breaks free, and begins to discover what happened to him. Grabbing a roustabout, he threatens to put his claws through his jaw, and convinced the man talks.

Wolverine finds his costume and goes straight to Jean, knocking Cyclops out and threatening her. When she stays out of character he slaps her once, twice and is about to hit her a third time, when something below conscious responds and she explodes into Phoenix, nearly roasting Wolverine in the process.

Mesmero is struggling to overcome the Beast, but he is starting to give when the door to the room bursts open and one of the workers yells that the X-Men are free, stunned Mesmero releases his hold on the Beast who lunges for the other, only to suddenly collapse.

Shocked Mesmero turns and sees a shadow looming over him and quakes in fear...

The X-Men (freed by Phoenix) takeout Mesmero's lackeys and burst into his trailer, to find him standing over the Beast, but when Cyclops challenges the green skinned mutant, Mesmero collapses.

Stunned the X-Men can only watch in horror, as the chair behind Mesmero's desk slowly turns revealing Magneto, who informs the group that as he told them the last time they met, they will fall before him...

We see here a sudden development for Wolverine, his strength of will, his ability to do what needs doing no matter what, a dark sense of humour, and there are hints of something more... the fact that he breaks Mesmero's hold could be attributed to the number of times his head has been messed with makes him more able to resist mind games; his ability to break his chains so easily could be down to his admantium skeleton, still not mentioned, the same said about his healing factor.

Bah. Wolverine.

Mesmero's in one of the cartoons messing with Gambit's head to make him break in somewhere... (Angel's place I think) and nick something. Can't remember what.

Sorry Mouse, still a while to go until Gambit yet....

Tray and see Wolvie from a different angle, not the over used, over-powered character we know today, but as something fresh and new, the like of which had not been seen before. A character who was developing from scratch, hardline, not afraid to kill at a time when most heroes were so clean cut they could be seen through... then hate him again when he starts getting over used. :D

Noooooooooo! To all statements. ;)

Ok, I'll try. He just seems too perfect to me!

We're about to hit the run of issues that cemented him as THE character. Unfortunately it's also the start of what eventually makes him what you don't like.

It's that unfortunate dichotomy, something becomes really popular - then everyone wants to use it, it becomes overused and then spoiled.

But it's fun while it lasts...

You know, I don't actually mind his personality and his backstory is interesting. It's just the whole power thing which I hate. His powers suck! :D

Yeah, again though that is as the popularity grew so did his powers. When they eventually nailed his powers down it was as follows:

He had an enhanced healing facility, that allowed him to recover from serious wounds, that might have maimed someone else. But it took time, he could be injured, or technically die.

The enhanced healing meant that he was always in the prime of health, bot not better or stronger than anyone else - probably close to Captain America.

It also sharpened his senses to the best they could be, almost to animal levels.

It also meant that he could survive something that others might not, so he was a perfect candidate for an experiment to bond adamantium to his skeleton, and to give him solid retractable claws...

Later it would get a lot worse...

The All New, All Different X-Men 112-113 (Claremont & Byrne)

Magneto tries to goad the X-Men into attack, but Cyclops holds them back. However when Nightcrawler teleports outside to check if Magneto is alone, he finds that they are happily flying through the air under magnetic power. Cyclops still manages to rein the X-Men in, but they are itching to have a go.

Magneto explains how he was ready at last to face the X-Men; how he went to the school only to find it deserted; how by blind luck he saw and followed the Beast and found his foes reduced to Carny freaks; he easily overcame Mesmero and Beast with a single magnetic blast, and now has everyone at his mercy.

The flying caravan has attracted attention and the Brazilian Air force is doing its best to give chase, but they cannot keep up with the UFO as they define it. Suddenly a body is thrown out the door and Mesmero leisurely begins to descend into teh Amazon below, unconscious, his descent controlled by Magneto.

They continue to travel over the surface of the world, protected by a sphere of magnetic force, travelling faster than any machine. Soon they are above the Antarctic, where they are carried down into the maw of a volcano, protected as they sink through the lava, then into a hidden base, one of many that Magneto has scattered across the globe.

As they land the X-Men are thrown to the floor hard, all except Cyclops who is better prepared knowing Magneto as he does, and without pause he lets loose a full powered optic blast, that smashes the villain through a wall. As he staggers to his feet he is punched by Colossus, but it is a pointless assault, what good is organic steel against a man who can control magnetism?

As the X-Man is thrown away, Beast attacks, but is outwitted by a static electric blast that knocks the Avenger out. Storm attacks, knowing that if she holds back at all she will be in trouble, but her ingrained love of life stops her cutting loose for real, and Magneto gathers her lightning using his own powers and blasts her with it. Night crawler watches from the shadows, almost invisible, he leaps into the fray, but before he even reaches his foe, Magneto pulls Colossus back through the air. Realising the danger at the last moment, the steel X-Man manages to turn back to flesh but it’s too late, he smashes into Nightcrawler knocking both of them out.

Next up Banshee comes hurtling in, hitting Magneto with a horrendous sonic wave, but once again the master of magnetism is ahead of his foes, he sets of a vibration in the walls, which creates a disruptive harmonic pattern (hey it’s comics) doubling the attack and then reflecting it back on Banshee. He falls.

Cyclops regains his feet and attacks, knowing that they are in serious trouble, the team have been attacking as individuals, when they do that they cannot hope to win. All the same his optic blasts begin to buckle Magneto’s defences. But he can do two things at once, and even as his shields begin to fall he grabs some metallic debris and pulls it across the room, so it smashes into Cyclops’ head. He collapses.

Phoenix attacks, and with her full fury unleashed Magneto suddenly is afraid, he is not just on the defensive, he is losing – but just as she realises she is enjoying the power it cuts out and Magneto is quick to take advantage, overpowering her, but as he begins to gloat, Wolverine comes out of nowhere and just misses cutting his spine out. Magneto seizes control of the metal claws (no mention of metal skeleton yet) and threatens to run them through Wolverines skull. At the last moment the claws retract, Magneto’s doing and he knocks the X-Man out, letting us know he wants the X-Men alive for now.

They all come to trapped in prison like chairs, their powers neutralised, with Nanny, a robotic prison warden looking over them. But worse they are told that Magneto has scrambled their nerves and muscles, they cannot move, they cannot use their powers, they cannot communicate.

In fact they have been reduced to the level of toddlers, while being perfectly aware of what has been done; much like Magneto had been.

And this is his revenge.

Magneto attacks and destroys an Australian military base, a message to the world that he is back and that there is no one now who can stop him.

Elsewhere Professor Xavier confesses to Lilandra that he has lost contact with the X-Men and is worried about their safety.

Nanny takes control of the X-Men regularly humiliating them, and we learn that days have passed. But Storm has learned the robots pre-programmed routine. Once it leaves the room she knows she has a certain amount of time until it returns, and she has spent the time imprisoned focusing herself. In a series of jerked movements, she manages to throw her head-dress off, bend forward and pull her hidden lock picks from it with her mouth. She remembers how brutally she was trained as a thief on the streets of Cairo, knowing how hard what she is attempting to do is. As she comes close to picking the lock, the clumsiness caused by the prison overwhelms her and the lock falls to the floor. All she can do is wait until Nanny returns. The robot humiliatingly brushes her hair, puts back the headdress, and we are told that for only the third time in her adult life Storm cries.

More weeks pass, in which time Magneto rebuilds his asteroid base, and it’s only when he receives a signal that there is something wrong in the Antarctica that he returns to find the base almost powerless, Nanny going around and around in circles. He braces himself guessing that somehow the X-Men have escaped, but Even then he is not ready for the multitude of blasts that hit him.

Despite the X-Men trying to pull in different directions, Cyclops keeps them working as a team, all linked telepathically through Phoenix.

Magneto thinks that a lull in the fighting has given him the time to recover, but what he does not realise is that Storm is sucking the humidity from the air, and as he gains his feet Banshee hits him with a sonic blast from behind. He spins leaving his back open and Wolverine slashes, this time ripping armour and flesh, and as reflexively he sweeps the X-Man aside Phoenix hits him with a blast of pure energy, knocking him off his feet and tearing apart banks of controls.

Dazed and hurt Magneto begins to find his feet, but it is then that Colossus breaks ranks and starts pounding Magneto, too dazed to throw the metal man back, Cyclops takes the opening he has been given and commands Nightcrawler and Beast to join the fight. Beast throws Nightcrawler through the air, he grasps the helmet and pulls it from Magneto's head.

Colossus' next blow hits naked flesh, nearly snapping Magneto's neck. It's a miracle and a testament to Magneto's strength that he is still conscious but it is then that Nightcrawler notices cracks in the walls and ceiling, red hot lava seeping slowly into the room.

Magneto laughs telling them that the control banks Phoenix destroyed were those that protected the base from the volcano, with those safeguards gone...

For a moment everyone is stunned, but it is all Magneto needs, magnetically throwing Colossus into the X-Men, and making his escape.

As the walls start coming down the X-Men scatter, being spit into groups as the walls come down.

Separated from the main group, Phoenix tries to reach Cyclops, but Beast intervenes, pulling her to safety as the roof comes down.

At the same time high above, Magneto looks down at the burning base and accepts a victory when it is torn apart in explosions. Convinced that nothing could have survived, he leaves. So he did not see the massive firebird that suddenly explodes out of the ground.

Phoenix and Beast stand alone in the Antarctic snow and ice, devoid of any strength Jean collapses and Hank tries to carry her, he manages a couple of steps and then falls too, the sub-zero temperatures claiming him too.

This will be my last comic related entry in this thread, but it's not the end of my ongoing and somewhat sporadic history of the X-Men. It seems a good point to stop, and start in a new thread, you will probably guess what it is by the time you finish these last paragraphs. Thanks to everyone who has silently followed the thread, and even more thanks to those who have commented, questioned and generally added to it all... On the new thread, well things are just starting to get interesting...

These issues mark a sudden change in the X-Men title. The first is that for the first time since he became regular artist John Byrne provides the covers as well, up until this issue Dave Cockrum had been doing cover duty.

There is also a major milestone in the success of Marvel's Merry Mutants (sorry came over a little Stan Lee there) and in many ways a major vindication for the creative teams involved. What started almost as a favour for Len Wein and a possible one off, became a sporadic publication, then bi-monthly, but still a lesser title. However sales were increasing popularity was growing, and it joined the main players in the Marvel Universe becoming a monthly title. That could well have been success enough, but the momentum was gathering now, word was spreading, the X-Men once a second rate comic was on the verge of becoming the most successful comic of its time, and would dominate the place for many years to come.

Finally it marks a simple but defining change. Since it's comeback The X-Men had been simply The All New, All Different X-Men, and despite what was said on the interior title page, and in small print on the copyright logo that was it. But as of the forthcoming issue the title would proudly proclaim something else, completing that which was needed to cement the success. All the major comics had the adjective titles: The Amazing Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, The Mighty Avengers, The Incredible Hulk and from issue 114 this comic would at last proudly proclaim itself:
