Agreed, David Weber writes a lot of words that didn't necessarily need to be there -- I know this because I have read all of the Honorverse at least a dozen times each, and there are many words in there that I don't bother reading. There is such a thing as too much detail about spaceships and what makes them go. But on the other hand, because he writes for money successfully, he has the time to write all those words. I did NaNoWriMo and got my 50k words in one month -- but I have a full-time job and two kids attacking me when I get home, so I could never keep that pace up for more than a month. If I could sit at home and write all the time, sure -- no problem.
