TK--let's chug down a bottle of Ice Wine and see if the thread is so aweful. I'm sorry if I have offended! It's seems like it's been years since we've had a book to generate better topics!
I do think GRRM's opinion is interesting. He seems pretty passionate about not blowing the ending of a series and cognizant that it is a possibility. I hope it's a sign that he is on top of things.
I liked Lost (loved the characters), liked the ambivalence, light touch with the story and I was okay about the ending. I thought they made the ending too literal and heavy handed in the way that they filmed it and made it too far away from the suggestions, hints and glimpses of the first part. I thought going mythological was one of the few ways to go. It had to be "big" and it was. I just think they spelled it out very flatly. But, heck, how do you tie that one up?
I'm very glad GRRM does not appear to want to go "black and white" or wrap things up too tidily. He also seems to want to keep magic to a minimum.
