Night and Day

She envies him, so much so it leads to hatred.

He adores her, so much so it leads to love.

Night and day, light and dark, until the twilight of evening, or the ardent dawn where they meet and become friends, where love meets hate and they merge together.

For there to be one there must be another.

And in between they have each other.

ONE NIGHT IN PANDAEMONIUM ...

The city had changed. Angels nested on rooftops; demons laired in the narrow alleys. Only a fool ventured out after nightfall, even to rescue a friend.

But the note (stained with tears and holy water): “Desperate. Please come.”

Once, he wouldn’t have hesitated. Now—

White wings beat outside his garret window. A woman screamed and sobbed.

He crumpled the note in his hand, threw open the door.

The city had changed; he had not.

With Enemies Like This...

Gutteral commands. "Wort! Wort! Wort!" The enemy is coming.

The walls are friends now. They will fall.

Boots are friends. They're wearing thin.

Memories are friends. Fickle ones. She chooses them carefully, buries the rest.

The rifle is friend. Without it there are no walls, boots, or memories. Or, perhaps, only memories. After the things she'd seen, this thought terrifies her.

Of course, ammo is low. Nearly gone...

She runs.

Friendship is an urban fantasy.

Urban Meths.

Rain, he hated rain. Here, surrounded by the filthy stink of old rubbish; sheltering in a cardboard box; could life get any worse. He doubted it.

Cold, so cold; why was it so bloody cold?

Maybe tomorrow would be better.

Then again, at least for now, he had a friend.

Inside his coat, the kitten purred, warm, snug and content.

In the morning, he would catch a rat and they would have a feast.

Once Upon a Time

He had pawned his staff, and even that meagre amount had gone now.

He sat in bar corners, performing small tricks for a beer, or next best thing.

She was the bar owner's daughter, tumbling about in the afternoons lulls. She perched on a stool, legs swinging.

"Tell me another story."

The lines around his eyes faded; grey hairs shimmmered almost white.

"Long ago, there was a land, and a wizard..."

Getting the Girls

When the Peaceniks arrived with new ideas, radical
scriptures and unswerving faith in humanity, they saw
a city full of Urbanites enjoying the fruits of war:
excess and lust.

Fact: Peaceniks were never going to get the girls.

It was time they overthrew the tables in the temple,
time for the ultimate sacrifice.

They packed their gear and said their farewells,
fanning out in the shape of a cross.

And then they made some ghosts.

Woof woof!

The tiny dog whimpered as it landed heavily. It looked on, helpless, as tears mingled with blood on its mistress's face. Deep within the spirit of a predator rose and took hold, warping its form.

The muggers, rifling through the handbag the dog had been in, were unaware of the transformation, until a guttural growl echoed off the alley walls. They fled the wolf that stood there now.

“Show off, Fluffy,” smiled the woman.

Influence

It was a fact KittenStrangler new well: some people don’t like clowns.
And if you were a violent clown most people didn’t like you anyway.

So he moved to the city, where one day on the metro he met Bubbles.

‘Nice shoes,’ he said.
‘Nice fangs’, replied Bubbles.
Friendship was born.

Tomorrow Bubbles would give him a new name and face, one with a smile.
He would become a gentle clown.

The End of Eternity

In a big city hospital, stooped and wrinkled, Nettie stands before the nursery window.

"Elly!" she whispers. "Sister of my heart."

Behind the window, newborn eyes sparkle with recognition.

"Everything's so different now. Skyscrapers. Automobiles. Electricity..." Nettie touches a withered hand to the glass.

"Elly, I've paid your debts. You won't die again." Nettie half smiles. "But... I can never... return." she cries, as she shuffles away.

Police sirens drown out Elly's wails.

The Best Advice

"The wizard, Malachi, can do it."

"The boy that skulks around 5th?"

"He doesn't skulk...exactly. I've seen him do 'rines."

Todd shook his head, "'Rines ain't dolls, and Nelope has been out of power for ages. No way some kid can juice her up."

"Do what you want, she's your best friend." Victoria turned away and smiled.

Yeah, he'd be mad when Nel got ever-broke, but Victoria would fall in as the new besty.

Friends. Forever?

“No! Please don’t.”

“But I must,” he said, eyes boring into hers.

“I thought you were my friend,” she sobbed

“I am, which is why I must do this!” Swiftly he bit into her neck, drinking her blood, sharing his need.

As the transformation began, she saw the city through new eyes. A hunger woke within her that would never be truly satisfied.

“But why me?”

“Because I need a friend. One who’ll last. Forever”

A mothers worst nightmare.
Dear Mum,
I ran away because I was tired of our lazy lifestyle, laying about in the sun all day.
My new friends aren’t like that. It’s nonstop running, climbing; ducking rockets. Their favourite game is hide and seek, you’d never guess the strange places they find. I don’t want to boast, but I can break into most hiding places pretty easy.
They even have a nickname for me; ‘Godzilla’.
Please send cash.
Love,
Harry

Bigsmile

The city's sounds and lights called out to him
the beautiful people, the kind smiles...
He felt ashamed for his spying, but he wanted to be prepared.
Would they be prepared?
He adjusted his hair (all of it)
Mimicked a smile
And walked out of the forest

He hastily returned to the forest
Because despite all his love, all his charms, his best smile
They only seemed to see
His fur and giant feet

I thought it only right that I place my 8000th (counted) post in an Aspiring Writers thread (and one that I'd created).

Soul-Searching for Beginners
(Or: Soul Survivors)

Since They came, we've struggled to survive.

We, the dispossessed, are friends. No, soul mates. We hide from Their cruelty, skittering between the shadows, hiding in cellars and worse. We take what food we find. Sometimes there’s none, but being good friends, true soul mates, we share what’s left; otherwise, we’d all die.

My best friend and I are now together, body and soul. Be my new soul mate. Join me, Friend, in Animus City.

Philiapolis (or City 4, Wolves 0)

Midnight pavements echoed with the sound of running feet as the creatures pursued her into the alley.

“Dead end,” laughed one.

“Your mistake, human,” snarled another. “No friends here.”

Teeth bared, the four advanced.

She reached a hand to the wall and felt its loyal grip.

Paving slabs opened. Only she was held, protected, as stone vaults swallowed the creatures, then ground them into fragments.

“Dead end, but no mistake,” her friend, the city, said.

Quicksilver

At night, our city sings a song of light.

She only truly comes alive then – resplendent in feathers of azure and quicksilver, swaying to the music, lit by the gaudy glow of the bars and clubs along Oberon Street.

I can’t help but love her, and that is my downfall – it ensures that ours will always be a hollow friendship, inevitably one-sided.

I’d die for her.

And she’d let me.

And keep dancing.
