A Song for Solomon

Balkis, the lovely Balkis, was concerned.

“The King is unwell,” shrieked the Queens of Mesopotamia and Tyre.

“He lacks,” the physician said, “true nourishment.”

“Bring him food,” cried the Queens of Abyssinia and Egypt, squabbling over sweetmeats.

“Bring him drink,” called the Queens of Syria and Persia, squabbling over wine.

True nourishment requires more, thought Balkis, leading Suleiman to tranquil gardens.

“Sit, O Lord of my Heart, and listen,” said Balkis. “Once upon a time...”

Fast Food’s Foreign Foray Fiasco

Calories galore,
Condiments fourscore,
Protein, enough for cavalry or foot,
You’d think they’d salivate,
At my presence on a plate,
But no: I’m seen as aggregated soot.

A rational cuisine
(Meat developed lean,
Buns produced by automatic bakers),
Should really outperform,
The culinary norm,
Of local dishes’ worst domestic makers.

Thoroughly outfought,
Never wanted, never sought
Gastronomically beaten and all-in,
Rejected, (never heated!),
Utterly defeated:
“You're a better Main than I am, Gunga’s din!”

Soul Food

How 'oft on it's banks
I've sunk in a dream
Where willows bent over me
kissing the stream

My boat with it's nose
sort of resting on shore
while cattails stood guarding
a runaway oar

The red wing singing
just over the spot
I didn't care whether
I drifted or not

Just resting out there
for an hour or so
On the banks of the tranquil
McPhee Reservoir

In these fields are trees through which sunlight softly dapples.
They apples go to make the cider. It says so on the sign I pass.
I wonder if they sheeps like cider and eat the apples or the grass?
Mayhap I can ‘ave some cider, if I make it ‘ome alive.
Or mayhap I could eat a sheep. That’s if we all survive…

The Venusian Jungle Book

The luminous bushes rustled in the thicket. Nebizah crouched, ready to pounce, but checked himself.

‘Man!’ he snapped. ‘A man’s cub!’

The child looked at Nebizah and laughed.

‘How little! How naked, and--how bold!’ said Nebizah’s mate.

‘I’ve heard of such things. He’s altogether without hair, and I could kill him with a touch of my tentacle. But see, he is unafraid.’

‘Yet--he should be,’ said his mate. ‘I wonder how he tastes?’
