The Season 1 Appreciation thread

Generally enjoyed it, and think the whole production has done a sterling job of taking a the massive amount of detail and information in the books, and putting them into a TV series that can keep up a good level of pace.

Ironic to think back a few months when I got a review copy, and thought the first episode a bit flat and lacking to start with. It's certainly ended on a high. Riding beyond the north, Tyrion as hand, and baby dragons - love it!

I give the first season an A-

I'd give it an A+ if there had been:

- More wolves

- More of Bran's wolf and crow dreams.

- Fewer added scenes that served no purpose other than narration and sex for the sake of sex. There was plenty of sex in the books, and those scenes were fine, but those added as a means of narration was like watching someone paint a mustache on the Mona Lisa.

- More episodes. Too much was left out. It felt like I was getting the Reader's Digest version of the book.

- Did I mention more wolves???

The acting and casting was very good all around. Some excelled right away, while others took some time to get into the role, but by the last episode I was comfortable with all of the casting choices.

Can't wait until next year!!!

Okay, I laughed when Tyrion took a pee off the wall. And so did my husband. I'm not proud.

Ok, so, the first half kinda annoyed me - not totally just niggles etc. But I think they turned it around. Great stuff.

Overall a B+ maybe a A- I watch very little TV and am comparing it to other things I've liked so may be a bit harsh.

Having said that I love:
Ayra - she should be put up for the Emmy before anyone else IMHO.
Baelish - loved him on the wire, love him again now.
Robert and Ned - shame really but we knew it was coming, think Bean put ina great performance and (don't know who plays Robert) t'other guy also did a great job.
BFS.
Samwell Tarly - loved him in the books and think he's going to do great things over the coming seasons(yeah I'm optimistic).
Tyrion - Dinklage is a great actor playing an incredibly difficult role and pulling it off.

Here's a nice interview on Entertainment Weekly with the GoT producers. It's quite funny too.

Thanks, great interview!

I especially liked this part:

EW 'Game of Thrones' producers talk season finale surprises said:
Some fans were bummed they didn’t see anything from the battles, even though they’re not very detailed in the book either. I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say there’s a big battle in the second book. Will you be able to show that?
DB: There was never much discussion of shooting The Battle of Whispering Wood [Robb vs. Jaime's army]. We did have plans to show Tyrion marching into battle behind The Mountain. We had a whole way we wanted to shoot it following Tyrion’s eye level as The Mountain is just (cutting soldiers down). Ultimately we had to make some really tough decisions. We ran out of time to shoot it properly and we much rather have a great scene with our characters than a crappy version of the battle. We want to have some great battles, we’re working very hard to have great battles in season two. We’d like to have more direwolves too.

That makes me happy :D

From Westeros.org (via Winter is Coming) comes further evidence of direwolf appearances (and at least one battle sequence) in season 2:
Will BlueBolt be the lead VFX vendor in the second season? If so, has any preparatory work already started given that cameras are due to roll in late July?

Sadly not. As BlueBolt is a small new VFX house, tackling CG creatures with fur, plus CG fire and water would be too much of a stretch. Although we have all done this many times as individuals at previous companies, BlueBolt’s pipeline and development would struggle to do this in the short amount of time needed for the second series.

I just want to state, that within a forum specific to the book fans, that this series has not only a complaint thread that really became a like thread, it now has a dedicated thread to the appreciation of season one and another about what we're all anticipating for season two....and beyond.

'Cause we all want to see it, 'cause it's been done so well.

Among fanboys/girls of an adapted and distinct canon of literature that's unprecedented.

I suppose one could make the argument of LotR (again. which fails my understanding as a book doink) and Harry Potter, but I found LotR lacking after the Balrog and I never got farther than the 4th HP book.

My mom refers to Dany as Khalessi (which Weasel Soup and I talked about briefly), and I do too now for her sake.....but I honestly got worried what was going to happen to her when she walked into the pyre...even though I knew.

It's made the series new for me again, made new fans, and is just plain well made.

I watched the final episode again the day before yesterday. That final scene was done sooo well, like Wiggum even though I knew exactly what was going to happen I felt the tension build up. Seeing Daeny stand up and for a moment not seeing the dragons then having them show themselves.....one of the best scenes all season. I hoped it really grabbed all those people that were upset about Ned's death and made them look forward to season 2.

I think with the book coming out in a few weeks, then with the DVD coming sooner or later season 2 will be here before you know it.

I also just watched it again. The last scene blew me away even more. Dany walking into the flames accompanied by the sound of Mirri Maz Duur's screams. The screams/screeches of the dragon was an amazing juxtaposition to those of MMD.

I think the series went from B to A- as the season progressed. The first few chapters seemed a little too schematic, like the bare skeleton of the books. I doubted anyone who had not read the books could really grasp what was going on and get hooked on the series or take a liking to any of the characters. Everything seemed so "basic".

As the season progressed I think they managed to put more depth to the characters. Probably the one I most "loved to hate" was Joffrey. The kid nailed it.

The last chapter was amazing. The birth of the dragons, the Night's watch riding beyond the wall in full force... "The King in the North" was THE scene I had been waiting for from the very beginning and I loved it... and Theon Greyjoy's especially "heartfelt" oath of loyalty...? I had forgotten about it altogether.

The big minus for me (and I understand budget constraints and all, but I'm just saying what I would have liked to see) was the total absence of battle scenes.

I think they did an OKAY job. I know i'm going to be feathered and tarred for this but...I wasn't as impressed as most of you guys. I love the books, I really do but something about the tv series just didn't work for me. I might need some time to live into it but reading this topic I get the question "Was it really so good?" and I look it over again and I still don't get the same emotion.
I understand the whole give credit where it's due but I don't think it was that "OH MY GOD THAT WAS AWESOME" great. They did a good job but it was nowhere near perfect in my opinion :D

The things I did like though were some of the actors, especially the people who played Viserys, Joff, Jorah, Jaime and Arya.

I expect the next seasons to be more to my liking though, with all the hype all over the net the show is getting etc.

-e-
Also E10 who was playing Jaqen around 40.15? Were they using just some random extra right now or was that a guy that's going to play him in the next season(s) too?

You know, I was thinking...Even if they paid us nothing, I'm sure that all of us would have no problems with starring as extras in battle scenes.

We'll appear in the credits as "Battle for Blackwater extras: Nitpicky people from SFFChronicles"

(Flying expanses? Do you mean wings...? ;):) )

I'm not entirely sure that I'd want to be paid nothing to be in water, surrounded by other people pretending to be drowning, not to mention various bits of "wreckage" and... well, to say more would be to give spoilers....
