Hey all, I've just finished writing a PhD on weapons, warfare, female warriors etc (archaeology). Academia beats all the individuality out of you, but you can use quotes, poems or similar under your dedication. I want to use something really awesome from the GoT series, but need ideas. I know there's a favourite quotes thread, but need it to be more specific. Suggestions?

"I prefer my history dead. Dead history is writ in ink, the living sort in blood." - Rodrick the Reader

"There are no true knights, no more than there are gods. If you can't protect yourself, die and get out of the way of those who can. Sharp steel and strong arms rule this world, don't ever believe any different." – Sandor Clegane

"There is no creature on earth half so terrifying as a truly just man" – Varys

Tyrion Lannister: "Never forget who you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you."

That's a weird topic to write your PhD thesis about...But hey, not complaining. I don't have the book handy, but you might look into the character Brienne of Tarth. She is a hell of a female warrior.

I second Sy. Check out Brienne's fifth chapter in AFFC. I think Meribald's comments on the last three pages are right up you alley.

In honour of the beginning of summer (I really don't expect you to use this, since it is becoming quite popular with the HBO series):

Winter is Coming...

On this site you'll find a thread on the first page called "who said that". There are hundreds of good quotes there. The thread is well over 200 pages long. There is another thread called "favorite quotes" that is not on the first page. Also, using that new "Google" thingy that it used to browse the interwebs will yield lots of results.

or, just go with "Hodor"

One thing that interests me is that the female warriors, on the whole, do not get the love. (except Arya). I suppose it is because Brienne is too dull, while being consciencious, and Dany is too earnest?

Thing is, we don't get much too choose from.
There is Asha, Arya and Brienne.

Arya chapters are the most interesting, and i acually like she is a murdering little wolf. (though i'm not sure i'd like her in real life)
Brienne chapters are boring, but she herself i like, i feel sorry for her though, and for some of her motivations (I mean renly, come on).
Asha, well she had theon's measure, she's smarter than most ironborn (not that this is much of an accomplishment, i say it's the Reader's influence) but i'm not really into her character.

I'm hoping we get to see more from the Sand Snakes. I'm defintely hoping Sarella/Alleras is one the Red Viper's bastards cause she'd be my favourite female warrior so far.

Oh, i almost forget, the whore that came to help out the NW seemed nice enough.
I'm probably forgetting a bunch of others but it's been a while since my last thorough read.

Mmmm, Dacey. She's better than a poke in the eye.

Yes the Renly thing is strange. But I've seen things like that happen.
Very odd, offbeat Joan of Arc ish character.

Oh gosh, I forgot, mmm, Dacey!

Then lots of us like Lyanna. I wouldn't call her St Lyanna(good taste for not settling for Robert), but that's another reason that I like her.

Yes, more sand snakes.

Wouldn't want to tangle with Arya. I like her chapters, and I like her will to live. I still think the Hound and Arya were meant for each other. They are an interesting pair, and I hope the TV series does it justice. But now that there is an insurmountable age gap, she may end up with Gendry.

So the ultimate quote may be "stick em with the pointy end"?:)

When Tyrion and Varys are talking there's something about how power comes down to the man holding the Sword.

"Gods and dogs alike delight to piss on me."--Dolorous Edd

Or

"A cook will always try and prune you" -- Dolorous Edd

Pretty much anything by Dolorous Edd.

Of the ones I can think of right off this one is tops! Great pick Lyanna!

I don't find it all that strange that Brienne would go gaga for Renly. Most everyone loved Renly, he was polite, nice, whatever to all, didn't react badly to her as most men did.

For females warriors though give me Arya or the Sand Snakes anyday!

It is not a "quote" but there is a passage (sorry have to look for where unless someone else knows) where Maege Mormont is describing the statue of the warrior that gaurds Bear Island and what she stands for that is a great image of the female warrior.
Eulalia, my first thought when I saw this thread was "Stick them with the pointy end" so glad somebody finally put that up!:D

About Brienne having a crush on Renly ... I agree with Needle. I think Brienne has such low self-esteem and she's so used to guys either blanking her or mocking her. So when she meets a polite, charming, popular and respected man, who treats her well and respects her, she just can't help herself.

Did Brienne know that Renly was gay? I can't actually remember. Maybe that might have added to his appeal too, as it made him unattainable. She would never need to deal with his rejection because she knew she couldn't have him in the first place.
