As expected, the poll is a fight between A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. I found it interesting that even A Game of Thrones got a few votes. A Storm of Swords, predictably, has none.

For me, it was a close call. But on further reflection, I decided to go with ADwD. AFFC, for all the criticism it gets, did introduce us to the Cersei and Jaime POVs, and for that alone I would rank it above ADWD. There were hardly any parts of ADWD which gripped me; this is not to say that the book was all bad, but just kind of linear for the most part.

This thread makes me wonder if I should even bother with ADWD.

Well, if you've read (and enjoyed) the first four, then why not?

The alternative would be to give up on the series, or at least skip this one. I wouldn't advise either. Yes, ADWD is one of the weakest in the series, but it's still a decent book. Certainly not bad enough that I would recommend skipping it altogether.

Mouse, i think that as with AFFC, aDWD gets better when it's re-read, and I now think it's a better book than i did at first. In addition, I'll repeat what I (and other people0 have said before. GRRm on his worst writing day is better than almost anyone else on their best day. Also, not the name of the threa dwas "least favorite', not worst, a choice of words I intentionally made. The books are being compared only to the other books in the series, and IMO, ASOIAF is still the best series i've ever read.

Cheers, guys. I will read it, I just won't rush to read it. And to be honest, I don't remember AFFC being as terrible as people say it is.

I don't do re-reads (too many books, too little time!), so my memory of what's already happened is hazy. I've read the prologue already and had a vague recollection of the names as I was reading, so I'm hoping I'll remember as I go!

The thing is, my taste has changed too. I'm not so much into these epic type fantasies as I was. J.V. Jones took years to bring her third book in the series out and I'm struggling to finish it (haven't picked it up for months actually!) But I did love ASoIaF when I first read the books so... ;)

Mouse, if I had my time again, I'd probably wait until Winds of Winter came out and then read DWD and WOW one after the other. Much as DWD disappointed me, I think if I'd been able to carry straight on with the story I wouldn't have been so bothered by its flaws.

I might do that, HareBrain. Time I get round to reading it, the next one'll probably be out anyway! :D
