Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Just looked up "play" on my dictionary.com app; there are 62 definitions! Talk about diverse options! Wowzers.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Ooh horror! Tempting...

2001 though? I'm 15 again! *cough* :D

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

I was thinking kittens and mice myself as in, when the cats away the mice are fair game.

All the while making it family 'fiendly' and gory of course.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

hey - kittens! that was my idea!! I spent all day thinking it up too ;)

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Woe is me! I am undone!! Outside of reading some Edgar Allen Poe and Frankenstein I shun horror
You're better off than me, then, Parson. One Poe, a few scenes from horror films, and that's my sum total. Anyone got a Bluffers' Guide to Horror?

... the Black Plague.

Let's see:

Ring around the Rosie,
Pockets full of Posies,
Ashes, Ashes,
We all fall down.
More like pneumonic plague, rather than the Black Death, in the standard UK version:

Ring a-ring o' roses
A pocket full o' posies.
Atishoo, atishoo,
We all fall down.

Ooh... I think I may have had an idea...

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

So another blow to my chances of winning this month, then....

;):)

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Be careful for what you hanker, chief...

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

You're right.

(Apart from anything else, one shouldn't let oneself succumb to nasal gazing.)

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Horror and humour; the two most difficult genres to write successfully in. This month is a real challenge and no mistake.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Excellent thinking in the horror section, Marvin! We'll have to bump the thread in a week or so, as well.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Having read the first three entries, something tells me the word "shortlist" will be especially inappropriate this month.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

No-One is right, three spectacular tales straight off...

Seem to be a bit tied down at the moment, had a quick go at this and come back with a 106 word story which might be just a little too long...

Maybe you need to take an axe to it then? Which would seem quite appropriate given this month's genre.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

Three great new stories but argh! -- this is why I don't read horror -- it's scary. It does seem to be generating lots of good stories.
I hate/love-but-reluctantly Oskari's in particular -- can't get that image out of my head and it bothers me on several levels -- must think about something else... bunny rabbits, maybe.

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

And another month dawns, it's amazing how much easier it is to write my comments without tying them to the first line of a poem, or binary conversions!

These first entries have blown me away, it seems that horror is allowing people to pull all the stops out.

I'm currently working with three ideas, but seem unable to get below the 100 word mark!

HareBrain – A super fast and apparently tipsy entry, but a really great idea. Just the idea of turning John Carpenter’s thing into a stage play was good enough, but then transforming it into a bloodbath and ‘real’ just seemed to be the perfect escalation. Even better the true monster survived to write his review.

Mosaix – this one was unusual that it did not shock me, rather it was a simple sense of dread as I realised what was going to happen and why. Quite a good reaction from so few words.

Hex – A third brilliant entry. The presentation and delivery were near purrfect. I liked the idea of seeing how the cat’s mind worked, and having it thrown at you in a roundabout way seemed even better. It comes across as a gruesome horror, but then you realise it’s just a cat. But the horror lingers. Especially if you are a mouse.

Starbeast – A great and wryly amusing story. I just loved the idea of a vampire trying to audition for a role in a play, and being turned away. I’m not sure what I really thought of that last sentence, it just seemed tagged on – but I guess it could be down to the word restriction, because the thought behind it is really quite funny – as a reader I was waiting for the terrible retribution from the vampire and we got a poop!

Oskari – (A first timer in every sense of the word) Part of the fun with this one is the undefined nature of the game being played, is it a challenge of some kind, a television quiz show or just a game, but the spectacle of a woman needing to be put back together and the description of her dismemberment is quite a visceral one, and sticks in the mind after reading is over.

southron sword – There is a dark humour here, and it is so well presented that it unfolds beautifully, pushing the reader first one way and then another. For me there was no telegraphing as where it was going, at least not in the matter it was presented, from some kind of roleplaying game to a bloody decapitation. Well I suppose it could have been a game...

Re: Discussion AUGUST 75 Word Writing Challenge

So... I've my first attempt written and edited and reviewed. Just not sure if its horror-y or not seeing as I don't read, write, watch or listen to the genre...guess ill have to read a few more entries...
