Five and a half days

War raged across the planet. Children murdered, women violated, landscapes destroyed. Everything he had worked for...ruined. A girl stared at him, a silent "Why?" on her lips.

He woke, drenched in sweat and gasping for breath.

Michael was waiting, clipboard in hand. "Day six, Lord. You're creating animals and humans today."

"Hmmm." War. Hatred. Betrayal. "Change of plans, Michael. Half-day today, and after lunch you can try and beat me at golf."

The Others

So they tried to convince you of their innocence. Parasites!! And you call them Angels. Pah!

To us, the exquisite taste of a soul in torment is irresistible. We’ll run icy fingers down the spine of your fears, manipulating your darkest desires for our own vicious pleasure.

Come closer . . . . . .

Your existence will become a macabre, nightmarish parody of what it once was.

We’re the ones with the real power.

Every night there are more of them in the alley below and every night the dreams are worse. They don't do anything or even move, just stand in the shadows and stare up at the window.

They all look the same - dead white eyes, skin like a week-dead fish, wearing dark, shabby clothes. Hands in pockets.

Their faces are as alike as twins, or clones. And each wearing an expression of unutterable transcendent love.

STUCK IN THE ANIMAL BODY

After endless weeks of therapy, the doctors said the child's horrible, vivid dreams had stopped.

She could go home, sleep in her own room without the visions of demons under her bed, dragging her down, ripping, tearing.

Her father carried her upstairs, he tucked her in, kissed her brow, and then, his face hidden in the dark he smiled, bared his fangs, and whispered -

"Have a good night Mary".

When dreams turn to nightmares

#1986982 left the citizen habitat and waited for the national transportation service.

Today was #1986982’s birthday. They were 40. #1986982 enjoyed their birthday as it meant extra rations. The state was kind to them.

Arriving at the national labour service, the entrance scanner detected their implanted RFID chips.

Progressing on, #1986982 continued into their service room, the door shutting behind them.

#1986982 was too old for service...

Death Is Not An Option

Dear reader, consider if you will the contradictory nature of a coffin lining. Soft, comforting to the dead but uniquely constraining to the living.

Consider further the similarities between a coffin and a suspended animation pod. One sealed to contain a body in death for eternity the other in sleep for aeons.

This pod, relentless in its task, will sustain my life for centuries yet.

This pod, relentless yet malfunctioning – I am awake.

Nightmare on Christmas Treat

I haven't any gifts for anyone.

Mom hands me another package to open;

my brain scrambles, trying to think what I have to give.

How can it be Christmas?

I don't understand -- did I really not buy anything?

A knock at the door jolts me awake.

I sit up, see pumpkins -- whew! It's only Halloween!

I open the door.

The candy bowl crashes to the floor at my visitor's three little words:

“Ho! Ho! Ho!”

Nine Tenths of the Law

“Don’t worry, darling. It was only a bad dream.”

Danny’s mother must've thought he’d been having a nightmare.

And yes, he had been screaming. Who wouldn’t? For he knew how this would end; the screaming would soon become more frequent and more public. Before long, the Shaman would talk of possession.

He knew what that meant: an excruciating death for him and his host, Danny, and a quick and painful transfer to another co-victim.

Albtraum

She wakes, gasping, bathed in sweat. In his comforting arms she sobs of the torment -- of the elf-demon squatting on her chest, bringing the nightmare, feeding on her terror.

“You’re safe, darling,” he says, gentle. “I’m here.”

Tenderly, he holds her until, exhausted, drained, she falls asleep. A dreamless sleep. At first.

Smiling, he strokes her breast, then straddles her body. She groans.

Groans become cries.

He rises up, changes... and begins to feed.

What Dreams May Come

It hunts me, soft-footed, relentless, through the night,
...Knows me,
The frantic beating of my heart,
The rank scent of night sweat.
I fear to sleep
...In dread that we might meet.

I can't escape! Careless, I've backed into a corner.
...Yet I am armed,
A sword I've never dared to use,
The pommel cold, it burns my hands.
... I strike: once, twice, three times—

And wake,
Knowing the nightmare
Comes again tomorrow night.
