Naming characters in fantasy

*high-fives self* whoo! thanks :)
Lil is Sanskrit and Ira is Maori I dont know what those tribes are or where they are in the world so I thought I had better check.

They sound similar enough anyway, I feel. Others will probably make their own opinions but I don't think it's too far out there to use them both.

Now if you had someone named Tim or John in there, something would stand out.

OKOK so I have the mens' names figured out Ajan, Oken, Evan. now I want some womans names to go alongside them. Lalitambika comes from a different origin then Irirangi but could you see those women growing up in the same village and even more importantly in the same village with Oken, and Ajan?

Hmm. I'm wondering why the women have really complicated names and the guys have short, grunt-worthy names? Logically, they would all have long flowing names or short, pithy ones. Lal and Ira fit much better, but of course, Ira is also a guy's name. Iri is nice and sufficiently "fantasy"-sounding.

FYI, the Maoris are from New Zealand. Sanskrit is an underlying language of many in the middle east and India.

thank you. I didnt think they would be near each other. I have the social structure set to fall into a Matriarchal footing when equality becomes less necessary. the names are a foreshadowing of that, that I hope will be too subtle to be picked up on.

So many good ideas. Seems like I am definitely not alone. Though I think at times a name just pops into your head, at other times you have to really fish around to find just the right one.
