Tuesday, 7 Feb. 2012...

It has bothered me as a fan of classic lit specially 1800s lit that i have never read Dickens novel. Sure i liked David Copperfield mini series by BBC and the fact he was one of the authors most read parts of in school made me forget him when i became a reader later on.

I plan to read A Tale of Two Cities as my first novel of him. I can use this event as timing to read him. That novel sound different than his urban London books he is known for. The reign of terror, two cities, the two men etc

I've just started on Sketches By Boz, I may also read another of the travelogues and a collection of the so-called "Christmas books" in the festive season...so up until the New Year anyone else planning to read these particular works MAY wish to join in prior to the 'main event'; namely the novels in 2012.

My goal is to begin reading the novels in Jan 2012 in Chronological order. Like Extollager, I have work commitments, so I don't know how practical it will be to try and synchronize readings here? Especially as not everyone has all of the novels nor may choose to read them in a specific order or wish to wait around until others have 'caught up' etc.

My plan is to simply label any posts where I'm discussing or commenting on a Dickens novel with the title of that work. That way anyone else who has not yet read that work but intends to do so in 2012 may decide to avoid those particular posts in this thread or may decide to read them anyway along with anyone else who of course is just interested in Dickens or wishes to join the discussion at the time or a later stage of the year.

Of course I'm just one person, so other members will no doubt decide upon how they are going to post here.

Would it be possible to override the usual Chrons rule that states that, to have an author heading of his/her own in the Forums section, an author must have had at least five threads (if I'm understanding correctly)?

If there were a Dickens zone the way there's a Lovecraft zone, a Dick zone, etc., then threads on the various novels and other books could begin there and would be easy to find. As the bicentennial year idea catches on, there might be quite a bit of activity here at Chrons that is related to Dickens.....

I'm sure Dickens influenced Tolkien in many other ways, both The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings have characters being forced from their homelives and out into the scary world. They both meet a number of interesting and bizarre characters. They both have to work very hard to retain their innocence while becoming strong enough to do what they have to do . . . etc etc

In that manner, a lot of fantasy that's derived from Tolkien is also influenced by Dickens.

I don't think that 'rule' could or should be overridden in fairness to other members and the various threads that do pop up which they are equally keen on promoting over a sustained period of time but certainly we could perhaps try and come up with some sort of novel strategy (pardon the pun) that better satisfies the potential for multiple threads (possibly for those novels which the majority of participants own or seems to attract the most amount of attention) depending as you say on how strongly the whole Dickens discussion progresses. In fact we used to and still do in fact have a specific Book Club thread designed for just such occasions where like minded members can come together to discuss the book of the month that's admittedly been a tad spasmodic over the years http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/book-club/. Given there are 14 novels divided into the 12 months of 2012 that could be a possibility. I say that with some hesitation because normally a book is chosen by majority vote by the participating members not all of whom would obviously be Dickens fans (in this scenario) with books therefore featuring different authors, so it could be problematic and also remembering Dickens is clearly not SFF which to be fair is the central keystone of these forums not that that in and of itself that should be a sole reason for precluding non SFF. Please note I'm simply throwing that up as a possible idea with some of the considerations that would need to be weighed up before a decision were made. To be fair I'll need to discuss this with my fellow moderators to see if something can be done. Remember, this is just one idea, we may come up with a better or seemingly more satisfactory one depending upon the popularity of the discussions in 2012....so please everyone watch this space. Of course don't also forget that the Dickens thread may not see a large participation rate or one that is sustained over 2012 in which case my preceding thoughts/your enquiry may come to naught.

For now can I suggest we use this single thread to promote further discussion regarding Dickens and the upcoming bicentennial event and frankly see how things progress in the early stages of 2012 when the main event of discussing his novels is in full swing. That's the best I can suggest as a strategy moving forward in the short term anyway....:)

So onto Sketches By Boz...are you planning to read your copy soon? I'm going to begin posting general impressions I have of the book next week as I've really only just started it now. Does your copy have the lovely Cruikshank drawings?

Gollum, you're right, the rules should not be overridden so briskly as I suggested.

For ease of identification by new participants, would it be a good idea to start a new thread here on Sketches by Boz rather than for readers to post comments on it on this "Tuesday..." thread?

There's nothing wrong at all in discussing the wider writing sphere - I think that's healthy and to be encouraged - but it would seem senseless to start promoting authors who are clearly not normally seen to be sff writers with dedicated boards.

Agreed to which end, as an administrator of this section of the forums we can always look to the Book Club sub forum as one way to better 'contain' or consolidate multiple 'novel' threads if the Dickens discussions in 2012 really take off and we have a dedicated monthly group of contributors that would sustain such a venture.

For now to keep things front and centre I will create a new thread as per Extollager's suggestion here under General Books for Sketches By Boz.

This current thread may still be used for general discussion regarding Dickens, the upcoming bicentennial etc.

Cheers.

This came in the mail today. Thought some might be interested.
