Author to give up Writing due to Illegal Downloads

Well, one thing's for sure, if the attitudes on this thread are anything to go by, pirating of ebooks won't be anywhere so big an issue as with music. :)

To be fair I think that's one of the big differences between the different media types. I think/believe/hope (not quite sure which) that most book readers tend to be slightly more thoughtful people and therefore slightly more likely to think about the consequences of their actions than the average film or music fan (at least of popular film and music). Maybe that's optimistic of me but there you go...

I agree with you, Vertigo. But then I would say that, wouldn't I? ;)

I mentioned before that I'd published music for a short while - just Googled for my old website, as I'd posted a lot of information on my "Chronicles of Empire" 'masterwork' as a reference, which I'm now using while editing my manuscript.

However, when searching for "chronicles of empire" I noticed Google's autosuggest included "chronicles of empire music", which means Google has noted some small volume of people typing in that.

Even more weird, in the search results for that, my old CD is now available on Amazon! Only one seller and one copy ... and a 4 star review!!

As I no longer have a commercial interest at stake, it's all a curiosity, and novelty.

And very, very, weird!!

Googled with deep foreboding. Yep, exactly as I feared, but ultimately a good point. Bands earn considerably from concerts and appearances. Perhaps in the not very distant future, these on-line experiences will do the same for authors whose works lend themselves to such disneyisation.

But what about serious writers whose exploration of the Human Condition can't be reduced to rides and mazes?

To be fair Inter, I suspect the more "serious" the writing the less it is likely to be pirated. I am making an assumption here, but I suspect it is moderately valid, that the sort of people who want to read "serious" novels are far less likely to be the sort of people who would download pirated copies.

True enough, after all, I only read serious books so I can leave 'em lying around when people come a-calling. If only there were some way to just buy the high-brow book jackets. Then maybe I Am Spock can get a second outing to the coffee table :)

It would be very interesting to compare fiction vs nonfiction in illegal downloads. And genres.
