Ancient Egyptian Historical Science Fiction

Ah another Egyptian avatar :) Welcome along to the Chrons!

Having said that I can't really think of any SF or F books set in that context. Tad Williams' Otherworld books have a lot of Egytian overtones and one part on one book (I don't think it was the whole book) is set in a virtual ancient Egypt.

But that's about it for me. I mostly read science fiction and I suspect there are far more fantasy book set in an ancient Egypt or analog world.

As someone who likes historical fiction and who finds African setting historical fiction even more interesting. My fav two historical adventures in Africa or Egypt is by Scott Oden. Lion of Cairo is a fine sword and sandal novel with alot of good details about medieval Egypt. His other novel Men of Bronze is set in Memphis of Ancient Egypt.

Lion of Cairo has light historical fantasy feel but mostly its historical fiction.

Christian Jacq has some ancient Egyptian based fiction. I remember being frustrated waiting for something to happen, while at the same time finding what happened to be decently readable. Similar to Trudi Canavan in that respect for me.

Rick Riordan has a YA series (name escapes me right now) that is set in modern times but involves all sorts of Eqyptian gods and magic. Light reading but quite entertaining.

I think that's his Kane Chronicles as opposed to the Percy Jackson books which feature Greek Gods

I believe you are correct, the Kane Chronicles it is. I think both series would be best enjoyed if you already have a bit of a grasp on the respective gods and godesses as they are really fun, entertaining riffs. :)

I've read one of the books** in Paul C. Doherty's The Egyptian Mysteries series. These aren't SFF; they're detectives stories featuring Amerokte, the chief judge of the temple of Ma'at.

** - I think the book was the The Slayers of Seth, but I can't find my post describing my thoughts on the book. It was, I seem to recall, an enjoyable read.

Guys no fantasy here please ;)

Historical fiction in Egypt is the thread name.

One man's magic is another man's advanced science:D

I think the only novel I've read involving ancient Egypt is Ancient Evenings by Norman Mailer.

Historical fiction IS fantasy. The historical aspect gives characters and settings, but even the most mainstream historical fiction have those changed around. Anything without an aspect of fantasy is a history book, not historical fiction.

I *know* I've seen a couple of dedicated historical fiction books set in ancient Egypt, as they were on my reading list at one point. However, am struggling to find the list. :(

Ever since this thread was first posted I've been wracking my brain trying to remember the name and author of a book I borrowed from the library years ago. It had a time traveller going back to ancient Egypt. I thought it was either by Robert Silverberg or J. G. Ballard. I have made loads of Google searches, but just can't find it. It is most likely out of print as I'm talking about 30 years ago when I read it, and it was a worn paperback even then. Silverberg looks likely because he has other published books on Egypt. It is now annoying me that I can't remember. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Hehe im so big fan of historical fiction that i didnt see science fiction part of the thread name. Well this is misleading, SF thread in HF forum :p

Well, given the paucity of recollections regarding "historical science fiction" and "ancient Egypt," my trilogy should do quite well.

Is this a trilogy you have written and published or are you working on it? Curious minds want to know:)
