Have you had a look at critters, WP? It's a site where you critique other people's work and, in return, they critique yours.
You can put up chapters of a novel or, if you prefer, request 'dedicated readers' who'll read the whole thing and comment to you. They're not your friends so they're not nice because they're scared of hurting your feelings (although some people are still strangely non-critical, others balance that nicely). It's password protected so it doesn't count as publication, whereas if you put lots in Critiques here, you are essentially publishing online (because anyone can see it).
Various members of the Chrons are on critters -- one of us has her first couple of chapters up this week, and mine are coming up next week
If you joined today, your story would reach the top of the queue in about four weeks.
