Discussion 75 Word Challenge -- MARCH

Great theme. Interesting that we don't have a single entry yet, normally there are three or four by now. Either people are learning to sit on their hands for a day or two or the theme is giving us all pause for thought.

I'm going to take my time with this one. Its a tricky yet good subject that takes a lot of thought to get right. I suspect many others are having the same thought.

So, I got it down to two, and I preferred the other one, but it was a variation on a theme I suspect might come up (I'll stick it in discussions at the end), and I looked for the poteen on my walk this morning, but the faeries are fierce about guarding it, so that didn't work, Alc. ;)

So, this one happened instead. I hope the N.Irish slang vaguely makes sense.

So, the first one goes up. I like it, springs. Some people never listen;).

I know what I am doing, but it is proving a bigger challenge than usual. Decided to play with the narrative a bit. Also not sure if it is magical realism so may need to include an element of that.

EDIT: Done. Not sure if it is magical realism or not, does anyone else really struggle with understanding the sub genres ?

Persistently, annoyingly and hopelessly! I have absolutely no idea most of the time what sub-genre the books I'm reading fall under. In the end I just have two; Good and Bad!

And already, 3 very different. Cheers for the comments Aber, and Alc.

So, we've had a hawthorn bush, and a leprechaun; no pressure Alc. ;)
Anya, lovely imagery.
Hex, very very good; scary.

And one of the reasons it's so good to do these. the first one I wrote today lost too much getting it down to 75 words, but I loved the images in it, and the story, so I've played at extending it today (sequel avoidance?), and it's at a very nice 1000 words with room for another 500 when I recharge the batteries, and it's pretty mainstream, so I might even try and see if I can place it somewhere. And even if it doesn't sell, I had some fun writing it. :D

I might be being a bit thick, but what does the theme - the uncanny - actually mean?
The word uncanny, for me means when something is very similar to something else, 'the resemblance is uncanny' but that's about the only phrase I know it from.

Anyone care to elucidate?

Anya, it was an interesting story. Then it got to the last line and it was plain scary. I loved it.

Hex, those dogs are terrifying!:)

Moonbat, the OED has it as 'strange or mysterious' and originally related to the occult - so probably from unkennt (unknown)

I suppose, odd, eerie or mysterious, Moonbat.

The challenge is certainly a bit different this month, it requires a bit of thought, methinks. I really like it though.

check the first couple of posts in this thread. I Quoted Teresa on the question and made some examples.

Thanks lol this morning I really didn't think I'd do anything. Then I watched an 80s cartoon :)

I've forgotten to title it again. If anyone remembers it is Haunting the Loch (naff though lol).

I'm going to try and hold out and not read any.

Yes, but uncanny and real, that's the rub; the two almost cancel each other out. I struggled. and knew I would keep struggling, so put myself out of my misery...

Well, I thought I'd take my time with this one, but slept on it and something just popped into my head. So posted away. :D
