My impression was the OP is perhaps seeking fantasy recommendations, but I prefer SF too, and as SF goes this is a pretty good recommendation - very accessible.

Yeah, I think the first Deathworld is exciting and fantastical so I don't see why it would turn someone off even if they prefer fantasy. But it still has a serious thread woven underneath.

The second book has an even more pertinent thread in that it raises the questions of who owns knowledge and who has the right to control it.
