Dark, gritty science fiction

I second the Gap series. It's still one of my favorites that I have to come back to from time to time.
Welcome to the boards Piddle.

I recently ordered the first two books of the Gap series. Looking forward to reading them.

I agree with an above poster mentioning the Revelation Space series as fairly gritty.

Also most cyberpunk stuff is gritty as well.

I recently read CJ Cherryh's Devil to the Belt and that was a bit dark and gritty, along the lines of the first Alien movie.

I remember thinking Richard Morgan Takeshi Kovacs books starting with Altered Carbon is both very dark and gritty. Dark in i liked how depressing, bleak the future was and Kovacs story is noir, action thriller. It oozes gritty.

Surprising dark SF i would recommend Planet of Adventure series by Vance. Those aliens are messed, i thought there was little hope for the humans in that world. Thats what i call dark in this case.

I think Black Man (or Thirteen in the US) is a darker Richard Morgan Book. Swann Song by Robert Maccammon's worth a read.

The world is not as interesting TK books in Black Man and not quite the same quality in the book either. Morgan SF thrillers are similar so i recommend better versions of Black Man.

There are many darker books i would not recommend.
