Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

I'm currently reading Book 4 and I haven't found that, though the first book is the best merely because it was first.

I thought book 4 was probably the best since the first one, it was a bit slow to start off with but the second half and in particular the ending made up for that.

I've enjoyed this series a lot so far. However, despite being an enthusiastic fantasy geek I find that it's the less fantastical elements of this series I like the most; the wry humour and the loving descriptions of London and its people.

I did feel they were slightly lacking.
Funny you should mention that... I've read all except the latest one (it's massively overpriced on kindle at the moment so I'm waiting till it comes down in price) and I really enjoyed them, but it did feel like there was something missing. I'm not sure what, exactly, but it felt like he could have made more of each book. Still, I really enjoy them anyway.
