Mishearing

honestly I've said chinchilla at least 8 different way in the last four days and still don't hear a difference when I say it but my mom does.

So ... how many people have been wandering around muttering about chinchillas and chin chillers for the past week? It's like a whole new internet virus.

To quote Wiktionary on the subject:

posh (comparative posher or more posh, superlative poshest or most posh)
  1. Associated with the upper classes. She talks with a posh accent.
  2. Stylish, elegant, exclusive (expensive). After the performance they went out to a very posh restaurant.
  3. Snobbish, materialistic, prejudiced, under the illusion that they are better than everyone else. usually offensive. (especially in Scotland and North England) We have a right posh git moving in next door

Always amazes me that Americans don't know what posh is. Reminds me of an American guy I met in Greece who I had the exact same conversation with... Which, on topic, also reminds me of my mishearing of his name.

He introduced himself and I thought he said his name was Ann Marie. Now, that there's a very feminine name, but he was a very pretty guy... Turns out, his name was Reed. And when he'd introduced himself he'd said, "I'm Reed."

I already knew what posh is. But people tend to not know I am American until they either actually look or I tell them.

I also knew what posh meant. Actually, it was used pretty frequently over here when I was a good bit younger, although we reserved it for people and things that were a good deal higher on the posh scale.

Snobby people speak differently everywhere, I would think! Not speaking like a commoner is part of what makes them snobs.
