Sorry for the rant, but when someone says something like that it just irritates the heck out of me, because I myself write fairly realistic space opera. It's a quite diverse subgenre, actually.

As for the OP... Leviathan Wakes is decent (I'm sure I'll get called out for saying that, but I enjoyed it, and people who like space opera will probably enjoy it as well.)

To be fair, Mouse has read the WIP in question and was commenting on that particular book - which is definitely space fantasy. I've read a lot of space opera, across a wide range, and mine is definitely at the fantasy end. Anyway, any spring to mind - character-led, elements of fantasy as well as sci fi?
 
Space Fantasy is in fact awesome. I am a huge Warhammer 40,000 fan. Some of the books in that universe are pretty good, but generally only stuff by Dan Abnett. Maybe try the Gaunt's Ghosts series?
