I see it as traditional fantasy so more damsels, knights and fantastical creatures. Think Brothers Grimm.

Argh I have two...and I can't choose which to post...dragon or frog...maybe tomorrow it will all become clear, or I'll have another eight to choose from, one of the two...

Fairytales? Good choice RcG.

Although, every line of thought I'm taking on this is being overrun by a small, grey, annoying Donkey! Aw Nooo!

I need to de-Shrek myself and think again!

Paranoid Marvin - Are we sharing a dream!? You posted above whilst i was typing & the coincidence made me laugh out loud!

Isn't fairytale fantasy where they all live Happily Ever After?:D

In the modern(ized) versions, yes.

The best counter example I can think of would be Perault's version of Little Red Riding Hood, where the story ends with the girl being killed and eaten by the wolf. There is no woodsman coming to the rescue.
(Not to mention what we know of some of the earlier, oral versions, where the wolf tricks her into eating and drinking the flesh and blood of the grandmother before killing her. brrrr)

And then there's of course artificial fairy tales of which the most famous, The Little Mermaid by Anderson, ends with the mermaid as sea foam with the prince happily betrothed to another woman.

This choice for the month of August is way outside my comfort zone. Not a ray gun in sight with mushy love, yuukkkk...

I'll enter something, but it might take me a while!

Just so long as she didn't rub the boiled fat of granny onto her skin - turning herself into a werewolf. Aren't folk tales wonderful? :D

Perrault's worth a look at, as is Angela Carter - she'd be quite close to fantasy fairytales. Witches are good. :)
Angela Carter's always worth a look at.

All I keep coming back to is The Nightingale and the Rose which is my favourite thing ever. Deeply tragic. So, mushy love? Not if it's unrequited!

Gotta admit, I'm not quite getting the 'fantasy' part. (Think I missed it earlier in all my excitement!) I thought fairytales were fantasy.

I wasn't sure how to define the genre... so mines a tale about a fairy and unrequited love. Closest I could get!

Damn my luck that my (unread) copy of Carter's The Bloody Chamber is out of reach for the forseable future. :/

But speaking of Carter, maybe it's worthwhile for those strugling with the concept of Fairytale Fantasy to look at modern re-tellings and adaptations.

For books e.g. the two(!) Beauty and the Beast retellings by Robin Mckinley, Beauty and Rose Daughter. Or her other re-telling Deerskin, based on the fairy tale Donkeyskin*.
Or a bit less middle-European, East by Edith Pattou or Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George, both based on the same old Norwegian fairy-tale.

For comics definitely Fables and related titles by Bill Willingham and Castle Waiting by Linda Medley.

For TV and movies maybe the The 10th Kingdom miniseries, and while not very good as a movie Snow White and the Huntsman is a good example for a Fairytale Fantasy.

*Horrible title there. I prefer the title for the Grimm's version Allerleirauh which is a rather archaic way of saying "all kinds of fur", which is what the princess' coat is indeed made out of.

P.S.: I love fairy tales.

Awww, come on, you can do it. There's nothing preventing you from writing a fairy tale IN SPACE!
Like, have the sleeping beauty be in cryo-stasis. The brave tailor (Garak? Is that you?) slays 7 AT-AT's in one strike. The third prince gaining his father's kingdom over his older brothers with cunning or luck is a scion of the emperor of the Centauri.

And the love's too mushy? Twist it like there's no tomorrow.

I'd love to read a dark, twisted fairy tale love story in space. /hint

I'm agreeing with Bowler here. I am trying to think something up, but, let's see if my magic works once again, saying nothing is coming up and I post five minutes later. That stupid fairy tale part is throwing a fastball at my bat right now though. :p
