World Fantasy convention 2013

Cheers, SJAB, I'll keep an eye on that Shamrokon one and see if they get a few more guests of honour. 30 euros is pretty cheap. (But I'd miss all my sci-fi muckers. :( Anyone fancy a trip to the Emerald Isle? We can guarantee rain...:D)

And I definitely think ComicCon in Belfast is on -- the King's Hall is only about twenty miles away. Yay! Down the road... :)

Finally met KRGreen the following day.
Left to right - Sorcha O'Dowd, KRGreen's friend and KRGreen.

I'm so called Aiyana "KRGreen's friend" forever now. But since she doesn't read or write SF&F, it's her own fault.

I don't think I can post the link but there will be pictures on my blog over the next few days and one of the ones currently includes some chrons faces!

I'll attempt a photo later, since that attempt failed :p

I actually think you can post links after 10 posts; 25 at the most. Guess we'll find out soon enough...

Links to other well-known sites, yes. To a member's own site -- website, blog, whatever -- not until the member is well-established, please, to avoid even the suggestion of self-promotion.

That's fine. It's only because another member noticed he was in one of the pictures we took that he suggested I link to it.

Yeah, that's my fault, sorry. Although there were other people in the photos too, just in case I come across as totally vain :p

Oh, and for all those who didn't go, I just wanted to say how approachable absolutely everyone was at WFC - the authors, the agents, and publishers. I went with loads of questions and get them all answered. :)

and I think I talked Tillane's ears off.
I wondered where they'd gone... Mind you, given how much I was rabbiting on, I'd be surprised if your ears were any better off! :D

I'll just echo what everyone else has said. I'm so pleased Alc found me on Saturday, as otherwise I might have missed meeting up with so many lovely people. Noisy (and windy) as it was, I thought the Hop Poles was an excellent little pub, and they were most accommodating when we took over the back of the bar!

This was my third FantasyCon, but my first World one, and I have to say that it was the best so far: I spent Wednesday evening chatting with a poet, got to fanboy over Michael Marshall Smith at one of the Book Clubs on Thursday, and spent Sunday evning and some of Monday morning in the company of the estimable Hal Duncan and friends. I did manage to embarrass myself in front of Neil Gaiman (a word to the wise: when showing off an Amanda Palmer t-shirt, make sure her hubby isn't stood behind you...), but you can't have everything. :p

All the authors and agents were great, the panels were - with one or two exceptions - interesting and fun, and I'd like to give the redcoats a quick shout-out as well, as they were brilliant. And Lucian isn't the only one who's got the convention bug, either: it would appear that I've agreed to do Eastercon, Loncon and FantasyCon next year. Oh, and I think I also accepted a challenge from Neil Williamson to have two shorts published in time for the next FantasyCon "so they can be up for the awards". Oh, how we laughed. And then I realised he was serious...

Also, when talking to another writer about keeping true to their own characters/worlds/ideas, do not emphatically say 'Don't write like Joe Abercrombie!' as he is walking past....

I think he prolly didn't catch the next part of the sentence, which was going to be 'Write like you!' but which turned into 'Just steal all his sales'

:D

It's alright. Knowing Joe, he was probably far too busy thinking about how to bring about Brent Weeks' downfall to notice anything that was going on around him. :D

Quite true. I was surprised at the results of the Gemmells. I really thought Joe would get it this time.

Wow! Sorry I'm late to the party, but I want to say that I'm very jealous and the con sounds awesome - and you all look so happy and wonderful! Meeting other Chronners would have been such a highlight! And Till was there!!! Till's met up with us a couple of times, since he's just down the coast, and he's brilliant. (Oh, and Chrispy, I so wanted to go there and hug you!!! And hug Brian, because Brian's so amazing to run this place!)

Two things, though: yay to Brian's going outside because of his bad hearing (hope that doesn't sound bad; I have tinnitus and bad concentration, and too-loud music and too much distraction makes me unable to listen properly, and it is very unpleasant to feel out of it when I want to chat too, so I'd have been outside when it all got too much as well!). Aaaand: Boneman!!! You can't think authors are some mystical creatures that only deign to converse with us mere mortals when it suits them. :D They're people too, it's just that they're ahead of us in the game and are published. Who cares how much they do or don't earn? :) I'd be more likely to be shy because I'm shy anyway. I make a great wallflower.

Here's a weird thing: paypal just informed me that WFC have sent me a £5 refund, for the transaction that I paid for the Kaffeekleitsche... so looks like the coffee and biscuits were very good value!!:D
