Authors Websites

Of the few things I picked up at Bristolcon was a comment from Marc Gascoigne, MD of Angry Robot.

He said he is looking to sign authors who already have an online presence. Website (blog) / twitter / facebook page etc...

The other comment that came up during the discussion was - never respond negatively to reviews or comments - i.e. don't point out that the reviewer misunderstood the theme/point of your writing. If you feel the need to respond you should limit yourself to thanking them for taking the time to comment/review your work.

It was good. The conference rooms were small enough that it still felt up close and personal.

Back on topic. Marc said AR wasn't a huge publisher. So it's hard to know if other publishers want the same thing.

AR look very professional and are global - whilst being UK based - but I see from their site, just as as most publishers state, that they are not open to unsolicited submissions - so it's back to the old chestnut of Agent representation ... :( until they have (another) open-door.

I'm considering starting afresh.

It might be worth not starting totally afresh. Google, and other search engines will have trawled through your content and logged it, making it a little bit easier to find your pages. If you start afresh they will have to do that again.

You can freshen up your existing content with a new theme, or new widgets, or new menus, or static pages.

Sort of on topic... I've been looking at Wordpress recently with a view to starting a blog in the near future, but I'm all confuzzled about hosting. What does that mean?!

Sorry for being thick. Any plain english answers will be much appreciated. Reading up on blogging and networking and whatnot has left my brain frazzled

'Hosting' basically means you can have your own .com or .co.uk site (so long as you've bought a domain name). I think. Though I have a domain name .co.uk but as I use weebly's hosting (which is free), my site has their ads (very small) in it. So... I guess a 'host' would be somewhere you load your website with no ads and what have you.

Am I making this more complicated or less? ;)

When you buy a domain you get the name only. Hosting is your little bit of space on the world wide web. Your renting it from the hosting company.

The good news is I offer free hosting for Chrons members. All I ask is a small link at the bottom of your site saying, "Powered by Gary Compton."

It will save you £50 to £80 per year - forever:).

I have several friends here using my hosting. You get a full control panel and unlimited bandwidth and emails.

PM me to setup:)

Gary... as I'm a bit dense, would your hosting work with my site even though it was created with Weebly?

I think so.

Normally all you do is change the named servers at your domain registrars to mine.

I then setup an account within my hosting CP.

Where is your domain registered and is it hosted on Weebly at mo?

EDIT Your anything but dense! Now me, I'm as thick as a castle wall:eek:

The domain's with 123.reg and all I've done is have it redirected to weebly. So my weebly site still has a weebly name and a .co.uk name, both work. So, I'm not sure! I'll have to look into it and PM you at some point I think, cos I can't work it out. :)

So when you say point. Do you have a specific Weebly web address or is it just changed to their nameservers?

I don't know what that means. I have a web address with 'weebly' in it, which just came with the free site which is hosted on weebly, then I have my own domain name at 123.reg which is a .co.uk one which is redirected to the weebly site. So people who know the .co.uk address can still find my new site.

Ah ok. Ta! I'll ask. I'm not good enough to make a site without a template.

I assume Gary could install Wordpress on his hosting platform where he couldn't with Weebly?

Ta... How's Wordpress different to Weebly though?

If you use my hosting. I can load you a wordpress blog. I've done a few but heres one I can tell you about AS Behsam

Aty has designed my book cover. With Wordpress you can choose from over 700 templates for free. Images, colours text etc can be changed:)

If you mutter a few times, "You are wonderful Gary." I will do it all for you while my ego is tickled. Once that runs out, just repeat the magical words to get the same effect:eek:

Thanks, Gary, but I do like the Weebly template I've got (plus it took me ages to put all the content on there!) I'll ask the customer service people when I have time.
