Knife throwing?

SPLITS!!! OMG, I remember playing that and my opponemt ommitted to tell me he had hypermobility... Did you also play the 'chicken' one- start with legs apart and move foot in, until you were in danger of being speared by the knife? Sheath knives... those were the days... we never actually stabbed anyone, or cut them, or threatened them...

I could throw a knife at a tree and it would stick very satisfyingly, but you had to be the exact required distance for the revolution of the blade. Always held the blade, m'self.

They were indeed the days, I wasn't as keen on the chicken version; I was always tall for my age which gave me a distinct advantage in the normal splits!

I always though that stage knife-throwers palmed their blades, the ones appearing around the victim are extended by springs as the, 'Thrown,' blades are dropped into a special pocket.

As to combat, specially-weighted knives are thrown by people who've spent years honing the art on their own (few militaries would waste time on a skill which looks good, but has limited use - no soldier willingly disarms himself).

I've thrown flat head screwdrivers and burried them into walls by holding the blade end usually half way up. It varies with the weight of the handle as to how effective it is. When everything is just right it goes in quite well.

Yes, the right type of screwdriver throws well: held by the blade, as you say.

I think a trick to knife throwing (held by the blade) is not to throw too hard ...

Um. Does anyone know how you throw a knife? I have a feeling you hold the blade to throw one, but I probably made that up...
You have special blades for throwing. And you hold them depending on what variant it is.

The most important thing for one-sided throwing daggers is to make sure that the dull side isn't the one that hits.

EDIT: You can also watch a youtube video on throwing knifes.

Feel sick...

(really, I do. Bleh).

Think I'll say "He had a knife but he was holding it strangely." and that'll cover it.

Thank you very much. Off to lie down now.

I rushed to watch it (of course) after seeing you say that. Wish I hadn't.

And for thrill seekers, the reason it is ick making is you get the viewpoint of the person on the wheel who is thrown at. Or in other words the view on the screen spins round in front of you. Just like rolling down a grassy slope when you were ten.
Lovely.
:D

But thanks for the info on the thread Throwdini.
