Need another word for...

You know, I kinda like 'ruinous,' it's more like it.

Not feeling any of those, amw!

How about "AL, handsome, talented and incapable of modesty, is a rising actor with a guilty past. Except he doesn't feel any guilt. Not yet."

I don't see a big problem saying "tarnished past" in any accent (I suspect others are just envious of my ability to come up with such a spiffing word) but clearly the solution is to only submit to northern agents.

Hi,

How about: Ambrose Lawson is a cocksure actor but with a past he doesn't want dug up. Guilty secrets run deep perhaps.

Cheers, Greg.

How on earth do you manage to pronounce "past" with a long "a"? I mean, aside from "paste", and then how do you pronounce that? I can't seem to hear it, in my head. And there are lots of voices in my head. None of them with the right accent, I guess.

I like "tarnished", aside from whatever the language barrier is.

Really, TDZ? Paaast, plaaaastic, faaaather, baaath are not only easy to imagine; they pop out of my mouth quite naturally. Say aaaah and you're haaaalfway there.

By the way, paste is payst. Aaaah is what the doctor asks you to say.

Paaaaassing on....

Can't his past simply be a bit dodgy?

I know this is stronger that taaarnished and chequered (as these two words don't necessarily mean he's done anything illegal, whereas dodgy does), but by talking about his past, you're already in effect saying that he's got good and bad in his character, the latter of which he's stepped away from (one hopes).

Ooooohhhh...! "Long a" means "drawn out" in this case, not "the letter with the straight line over it instead of the one with the little smiley curve."

Got it.

I thought of 'dodgy' originally, Ursa, but dismissed it as sounding too 'me.' Then I just wondered if it might look like I've used it because I can't think of a better word. :(
