I just read Spin by Robert Charles Wilson. I'll be getting the sequels and looking at his other writings.
I'm pleased to see he lives in Toronto (I'm in central Ontario). I recently noticed that many of my favorite authors are Canadian. He's joining Michelle Sagara West, Guy Gavriel Kay, Steven Erikson, R. Scott Bakker, and Dave Duncan.

GRRM. Well, I thought I'd never read his massive epic but here I am, hooked - thanks to the TV series.

I have been reading John Maddox Roberts' series of Ancient Roman mysteries, SPQR. I'm up to XI of XIII :) that the library had donated to them. I've long been a fan of Stephen Saylor's Roman mysteries, and these are based in the same general time period (Sulla, Pompey, Julius Caesar) but come at it from a different angle. Saylor's Gordianus is an everyday Roman citizen, where Roberts' Decius Caecilius Metellus is a member of a highly placed political family. Both solve murders and such and get in lots of trouble doing so.

This is good to know! I've read the first three Saylor books and really enjoyed them, and a friend has just loaned me the first SPQR book :)

Homer - read a poem of his completely for the first time in The Illiad.
Same here. I read the Fagles translation, and now have his translation of The Odyssey on the shelf.

Authors new to me this year:

Anthony Ryan - currently reading his book Blood Song, which is very good indeed, very reminiscent of David Gemmell.

Scott Lynch - finally got around to reading The Lies of Locke Lamora after having it on the shelf for a few years.

James S. A. Corey - a.k.a. Daniel Abrahams plus one - finally read Leviathan Wakes.

I've also been rediscovering Vernor Vinge, having only read A Fire Upon the Deep before now.

The sequels represent interesting departures from the original story line. I just finished Darwinia yesterday. A very good read.

Ben Aaronovitch -- I enjoyed Midnight Riot enough that I'll consider reading the next one in the series.

Donna Leon -- Leon is very, very good. Last month I read Quietly in Their Sleep and I suspect around the Christmas holidays I'll read one or two more by her. QiTS was a terrific police procedural.

Ann Aguirre

First heard of her through all the kerfuffle about can women write SF.

Reading the Sirantha Jax series. Its good. Definitely some unexpected twists in the plot. I found the alien races very convincing too. The psi parts of the story also convincing.
