Origins of Hodor?

Anyone have any good theories on Hodor's origins? Since it's GRRM, I sincerely doubt he's just a big man with learning difficulties - there must be some kind of backstory.

Personally I think he may be a Frey, since his real name is Walder. I don't really buy into the idea of him being part giant, since the idea of Old Nan and a giant is just.... no.

Wasn't he Old Nan's grandson? Nothing was said about him being half or quarter giant, but Osha speculated that he must have "some" giant's blood. He could be part Frey, but Frey's don't have exclusive rights to the name Walder. Just as some of the Northern lords name their progeny after various members of the Stark household, or like Lollys the Lackwit named her ******* kid after Tywin. Could come from anywhere.

There has been speculation that Duncan the Tall may be his grandfather. As mentioned above, Old nan is beleived to be his grandmother. This may be off by a generation.

Lolly's named her son Tyrion, not Tywin
Okay I was firing off the cuff but my point is that the child was first to be named Tywin, until Cersei objected. It was Bronn who chose the name Tyrion to REALLY get Cersei's hackles up.

Lord Clegane, first, let me welcome you to the Chrons. Second, get a grip on your sons. Third, I remember someone postulating that he may be one of Robert's bastards... which might make him the eldest ******* son of the late King and a candidate for the throne... I'd personally like to take credit for that theory, but alas I cannot. Mayhaps it was one of those posters of years gone by... Aegon the Unworty, AryaUnderfoot, Trey Greyjoy, MSBorba, Winter_Sorrow, Florian the Fool, ChasenFate, YOSSARIAN, the smiling weirwood.... Perhaps TK or Imp might know?

I don't remember that one :(

First off, cheers for the welcome :D
Second, yeah I realise I worded the bit about old nan badly, I got that she wasn't his mother, I just assumed that if the giant theory were true she would be the point at which the giant blood entered the line, not sure why XD. Though now I see that that would mean hodor had an even taller/simpler mother/fqther, which we have no mention of.
The bit about hodor on the throne is hilarious. What would his house words be? Hodor Hodor Hodor? Haha
PS sorry for quoting the whole post, not sure how to quote individual phrases on this site.

You are welcome. Can I ask you a question? Have you finished A Dance with Dragons?

This crew is pretty sensitive to spoiling the reading experience for new members. So we always ask if you've completed the series to date before jumping into discussions here, lest we inadvertently ruin something for you.

Welcome to the chrons!

Now could you imagine if Hodor ever met WunWun and Patchface? What a fascinating conversation that would be!

LC, jules knew exactly why I asked.

jules, thanks... and that was funny. I imagine the conversation to go something like...

Hodor: "Hodor."

Wun Wun: "Wun Wun like Hodor."

Hodor: "Hodor. Hodor."

Patchface: "Under the sea, the fish say, "Rodoh... rodoh... rodoh... I knoh, I knoh, oh, oh, oh."

Hodor: "Hodor?"

Wun Wun: "Wun Wun like fish."

Patchface: "The fish come to sing, milord. To sing, milord. I knoh. Oh, oh, oh."

Hodor: "Hodor! Hooodooooooorrrr!!!"

Patchface: "Oh **** *******! What the **** are you ******* morons saying? I ain't ******* heard so much ******* **** in all my ******* ******* life! ********!"

As old as Hodor?

I have the suspicion that the number of heirs will dwindle rapidly. In fact I think the process has already begun at the hands of the late Catelyn Stark.
I concur. As in real life, The Twin Towers will fall and many will die. The late Lord Frey will earn his name. His heirs will be fodder for dragons, Others, Northerners and perhaps Southerners. And then, as you mentioned, there's Un-Cat, who I am hoping gets to administer the coup de grace.

if Hodor is, in fact, an heir to the Frey line he may very well be the only one left standing, given that right now he's in the equivilant of an underground bunker, being protected by The Chidlren of the Forest et al.

Catelyn began it with the murder of Merrett, but Black Walder seems to be continuing it. His half brother, Walder Rivers, may be his accomplice or another murdering opportunist.

Whoever wins control of the Twins may still be considered a liability to the ruler of Westeros... and the lucrative financial and practical military location of the Twins may be too much for the Iron Throne to ignore. Just like the Lannisters married Lancel to Gatehouse Ami (a half Darry) to get the Darry lands and like they married Tyrek to baby Lady Hayford to get the Hayford lands, the Iron Throne may kill all the male Freys and marry one of the plethora of Frey girls to an heir just to gain the Twins.
