Book series most like Mass Effect?

Heritage Universe by Charles Sheffield, it has a number of similarities to the Mass Effect setting.

The conflict in the Alliance-Union series by C. J. Cherryh is quite good space opera.

You might enjoy Vernor Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep" and "A Deepness in he Sky", excellent hard sf.

David Weber has written a number of Space Operas, like the Dahak, Starfire and Honor Harrington series, sadly his more recent stuff has declined in quality, check out "Path of the Fury", available for free on the publisher's site, and Mutineer's Moon.

If you like stories about space archaeology you should probably check out the Alex Benedict series by Jack McDevitt.

You might enjoy a number of classic space operas, like the Nicholas van Rijn books, by Poul Anderson.
