They also have very active circulations. Their pulses flutter, hearts jump, blood beats loud in their ears, etc. I know there are other ways they could react, but for me it always seems to be about the blood and guts.

This is me. I'm surprised none of my characters have had heart attacks.

We all do it it and you can always reassure yourself you are in good company. I recently reread H G Wells' War of the Worlds and was astonished by the number of times he used the word 'tumult'. I counted 11 uses in one chapter.
