GRRM's "bombshell"

Oh Imp of infinite wisdom, thank you for posting that video. I laughed so hard at all the funny responses, and the interviewer was great as well!

What jumped out at me was when GRRM said something like "they have killed off characters that I have coming back in book 5, 6...."
and D and D explain the culling because there are too many characters for tele. So I stopped and thought...wait, who? I could not come up with a death that has not happened (besides roz, and she's not in the books).
Who are they talking about then? Who has died that should be still left in the books??!

Maybe by "killed off" he means killed and/or haven't used (yet)? Reek, Willas Tyrell, Xaro Xhoan Daxos (left in a vault with the only key destroyed seems like dead to me)?

Who are they talking about then? Who has died that should be still left in the books??!
I may be wrong, but isn't the Dothraki** whose tongue was pulled out via his throat by Drogo, in the show, still alive and kicking in the books?

** - I can't recall his name, at the moment, and can't look up his demise in AGoT because it didn't happen in the book.

I think it was Mago

Dany's bloodriders were killed in the TV series, but they're still alive in the books.

ETA. Didn't they kill all her handmaids too? I'm pretty sure they're alive in ADWD.

I dont think they have cast Belwas.
Loras, however...is VERY expendable in the show. That could be one that D and D get rid of that GRRM is thinking still has a bit of a story later on.

Dany's handmaids (at least one or two of them) were killed in Qarth in the HBO series, but not in the books. I suppose they thought that with Missandei there would be too many random girls hanging around. Missandei seems to have replaced the lot. I hope she doesn't have to be her in-series bed warmer as well, I'm already having problems with how much they've changed her. It probably will happen though.

I think they skipped Strong Belwas altogether. I'm guessing Selmy will be the one to fight the Hero of Mereen and boy will he kick ass.

But then who will eat the locusts??? Maybe they'll meetup with him IN Mereen in the pits? Ser Barristan can't do EVERYTHING for goodness sake :)

Blasphemy.

In the books, one of Dany's hand maids died in the red waste, but the other 2 are still kicking around, and her blood riders are still alive as well, but I don;t think they are all that important to the story. The show also killed off all of the thirteen from Qarth, who may yet play a role in the mereen situation. (In the books Xaro's ships are currently blockading her ports if I am not mistaken)

I can't think of anybody they killed in westeros that hasn't died in the books. Certainly many characters have been omited, but they can always be brought into the fold.

Blasphemy.

No blaspheme intended--Ser Barristan CAN do anything, but he can't do everything.
I am so glad I've given the books a second and more painstaking read if for no other reason that the 1st time through I think I was so in love with Tyrion, Jon and Dany that I missed how supremely awesome Ser Barristan is. I know THAT probably bordered on blaspheme, but hopefully I have redeemed myself? ;)

It is a blasphemy to state that Barristan MF Selmy (aka ChuckNaerys) can't do everything. This is known.

A big difference in the TV series compared to the books is you're dealing with a cast of actors, whom you have to pay. You can't have actors being in the background for book after book before suddenly becoming important, or being present briefly then disappearing and reappearing three seasons later.

Several times now they've either delayed the appearance of a character until they're more fully featured in the story, or they've expanded a character's role to have them in early.

"Hey, Alfie Allen, great news! We're expanding your role from the books so you'll be in pretty much every episode of Season3." (shhh, don't tell him he'll only have ten lines all season, and most of them will be "Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!") :D

Oh gods, the Theon scenes were getting old three episodes ago. What with all the Bolton-banner-exposure we've seen recently I reckon just about every non-reader and their grandmother know who's torturing Theon by now. They've already picked up on the fact that Roose is a backstabbing ******* and have their concerns about the upcoming wedding, so this one should be a no-brainer really.

If only some of the scenes with Theon were taking place somewhere else than that dungeon. I could have bought that scene with the girls if he had woken up in a comfortable bed, not quite sure whether he was still dreaming or not. That could almost have been good. As it was, this was just another uncomfortable sex scene in that bloody dungeon. Maybe the idea is to torture us as well? We'll all be a bunch of Reeks in our sofas going "Pleaaaaase, D & D, not the dungeon again! Pleeeaaaase, mercy!" before the season is at an end.
