Book Series - How Long have you waited, was it worth it?

Pug's story throughout all the Krondor/Riftwar/Whatwar novels is the exact same thing for me. I just saw that Feist released Magician's End last year... and I can't be bothered to pick it up.
Yes, Feist lost me quite some time ago. The first few books actually kept getting better, but at some point the story became too big for the world he had created - at least that was my feeling at the time.

An author quickly becomes irrelevant in my eyes when they take too much time in between sequels. I only took up reading as a hobby like 4 years ago and have not had the displeasure of waiting more than 1-2 years for a sequel to come out. Of course, that could change any time now.

I still have to read the last few books of WOT. Guess I'll get around to it eventually, but expectations are low. Somewhere along the years and many meanderings of the story - not to mention uncountable yankings of braids - the story lost a lot of its allure for me.

I'm in the same position. I have the books, but I still can't be bothered to read them yet.

Waited a long time for A Dance with Dragons and was disappointed. A lot of people liked it much more than I did, of course, but I felt it was listless and didn't live up to my expectations (and those set by the brilliant first three books in the series).

I've still not read it. At this point I'm not sure if I'm interested enough to ever read it.

Kevin J. Anderson pumps out several novels a year...

... well he dictates them and someone else writes them down.

The epitome of quality?

Wheel of Time.

I guess technically I gave up some time ago but have heard good things once it restarted but for the life of me I can not get pal Lord of Chaos. All that sniffing, braid tugging and repeating scenes from a slightly different point of view defeats me.

Although there is a series from the early nineties about an Elizabethan England in a world where the Romans legions were borderline magical beasts and Vulcan destroyed most of the world to avenge the sack of Rome. One day that may be completed.

Jack Vance made us wait 20 years for the last of the Demon Princes Series. It was worth it though. The book was much like the other 4 and nobody really expected much different.

Most of the series I've liked have had pre-determined endings, there were 5 Demon Princes and 5 books and everyone knew from the first that would be the way it was going to be written. A lot of Fantasy series just go on as long as the author can make money from them and while that's good business it might not be the best art, IMO

Currently reading The Children of the Sky, the sequel to A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge. It's fine, but almost 20 years in between has left me a little fuzzy on details of the events and characters from the first book. And, of course, I don't have a copy to refer to any more. Yet I soldier on.

My Brother bought Susan Cooper's, 'The Dark is rising,' from a schools book-club, and after reading it, I devoured, 'Over Sea, Under Stone,' and 'Greenwitch,' before waiting around 6 months for, 'The Grey King,' and a further 2 years for, 'Silver on the Tree.'

The fact that I still own copies of the entire series nearly 40 years later, is all the answer you need - and why I was most disappointed with the crude attempt to film, 'The Dark is Rising.'

Christopher Ecclestone ( The Black Rider); When I read the book.....

Interviewer; You must've been the only one on that project who did !

This is me. I bought ADWD as soon as it came out. I did read the prologue, then realised it'd been so long since I'd last read the others that I didn't remember a thing and couldn't really be arsed to read through ADWD wondering what was going on! I figured I'd wait for the TV series to catch up and then, maybe, read ADWD.

I've still not seen a single episode of the TV series either.

The answer to this depends on the type of series. If the next book is a direct continuation of the last like the GRRM books, then no. I have to wait for the entire series to come out before I start them. My experience with Jordan taught me to do this as I wasted time doing re-reads to get refreshed on the storyline. But if the book series is more like separate episodes like Butcher's Dresden files then I have no problem reading them as they come out. Those books (Dresden) are not at the top of my list anyhow but I am greatly anticipating Martin's books to be completed so I can get into them. I know you must be thinking "don't hold your breath".
