33.11: Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS

... And if the Doctor is named in that book, why doesn't every library goer know it? (I'm thus guessing it's the only copy in the Universe ;) but who wrote it? Did it say? I may have looked away for a moment at that point)

Given the title - History of the time wars - there is only one survivor so Who wrote it I assume

What about Who shouting 'doctor' to get attention from his other self ?

I liked this one better than a couple of recent ones -- I actually wanted to see it the second time, which I haven't bothered with for the last two (although I did watch last week's again before this one).

I don't like the corridors in the TARDIS -- I've never pictured them looking like the inside of something in Star Trek. Klingon ship, maybe, since so much of the corridors seemed to be green. The TARDIS is full of rooms, so it should have hallways, not those weird bulkhead things.

And those rooms had Dalek doors on them with push buttons to open them - something that confused the original Who when he came across them. (OK so I'm old)

I forgot to watch this until now

Like you all did, I was eager to see more of the inside of the TARDIS (Something we haven't seen since Davidson and Baker.) But the 'reset' did really spoil the episode. And the question of Clara wasn't answered at all. I also thought 'great, a mythology episode and not a monster of the week episode' but they felt forced to go and add monsters again!

Anyway, apart from all the problems you noticed, did you spot the Swimming Pool? And that the TARDIS key had 'Smith' engraved on it? Oh, and Clara read the Doctor's name in a book in the Library.

Next week's trailer doesn't look promising - rather too much like 'Carry on Screaming'!

Kenneth Williams as the main Dalek
"OOH MATRON! STOP MESSIN' ABOUT! EXTERMINATE!" :D

and, before we drop this daft idea, let's not forget that Jon Pertwee was in several Carry On films

Just watching this one again, waiting for the new one, and think I figured something out:

When the Doctor tells Clara about her other deaths, at the edge of the cliff, and decides she really doesn't know about them, then he says it's not real and they aren't going to die there, I think he means that she hasn't gotten to those things yet, so this is before.

I hope this doesn't set up a line of "Clara is invincible because she dies later" stories.

So...

What are you suggesting some horrendous meldi...

....

Yes I think you're right. It would maker sense...

God, we have all been fools and it reveals a production team we have greatly wronged over many years. I feel humbled: truly. I must write a grovelling apology to the producers, directors , the BBC and all those actors that have taken part in the recent past. I can only hope they will forgive me in the short time we all have left..

The vision, the secrecy, the careful attention to detail. The ingenious selection of cast members.

Well I'm sorry to have to spoil it for everyone, but a scoop like this...

I would be stupid not to reveal the secret now I know:-

Clara IS...

Captain Scarlet

I'd hope not too, TDZ, but it does not explain how she died twice. once in the past and once in the future, both times with no apparent recollection of the Doctor.

So there must be something unusual going on.

Incidently, according to IMDB it is not going to be a drawn out mystery, it will be revealed soon

I watched twice and still missed the pool -- when was that shown?
Like most of the rooms it was seen down at the end of a corridor. Budgetary constraints I expect!

No one else mentioned that books/bottle thing. I didn't get that either. In the future, chemical structures (such as DNA) may be a good way of storing information long term. Maybe that was the idea, (not very well explained.)

I'm sorry, I don't even know what that means, so all I get from this is that you think I'm incredibly stupid and/or ignorant. I will freely admit to the ignorance, as I came to Doctor Who at the start of 11, and have only caught up back to the start of 9.

However, I have never wronged this production team. I may not care for a particular episode, but I always assume that there is something more going on than I can tell right now, and that it will all come together in the end, and so far it has. I thought that's what these threads were for, where we post ideas and try to figure out what's going on. Sorry if I wrongly tread upon your domain with my ignorant speculations.

Sorry DTZ this wasn't meant to be a comment about you and I certainly wouldn't dream of making such a suggestion.

Captain Scarlet was/is a Gerry Anderson creation that was very popular over here. Puppet based, it concerned the war against The Mysterons who were a Martian race the Earth had offended. The main Protagonist was our hero Capt. Scarlet who, although he got killed every week, came back from the dead by some mysterious process. Basically the Mysterons killed a person and then were able to clone them and so make them their agents. Scarlet suffered this, but unfortunately for the Mysterons he wasn't fully dead before they copied them. This gave Scarlet the ability to re-create himself when he died.

Hence the reference to Clara.

Many many apologies for any offence.

TEiN

Oh, it's ok, TEIN -- sorry for taking offense. Not knowing what you were talking about, it read to me as a very snarky "we grovel at your feet, for this mind-blowing revelation" AKA "how freaking stupid could you possibly get". It makes more sense now.

But if she dies every week, doesn't that make her ... Rory? And that would make HIM Captain Scarlet....

Curiouser and curiouser.

The thing with the Encyclopedia in the bottles -- what I saw (or hallucinated) was this row of bottles above Clara's head when she was hiding behind a shelf in the library and the monster thing was banging around in there, and it was labeled Encyclopedia Galactica, I think, and one of them spilled and she started batting at these little critters (or fumes) that came out. It reminded me of Moomintroll, when they left a book in the Hobgoblin's hat and all the words crawled off the pages and wandered off. I forgot to look for it this last time, so I'll have to wait for it to come around again.

Now you bring it up, I recall the incident and I think you are right, it seemed like fumes to me.

I thought it was Encyclopaedia Gallifrey, though I can't be sure. If that were the case having it absorbed into your head could make for a very bad hair day.

Oh, undoubtedly you're right. I don't know why I didn't think of that. It was wrapped around the bottles and the last bit was not really visible. Encyclopedia Galactica did seem a bit ... Douglas Adams. :D

Great idea for an episode, how did it turn out so bad?

I thought, brilliant, we get to see inside the TARDIS, which was quite cool, but they could have done so much more with the idea. The burned-up versions of themselves were stupid. Why did they all turn evil as soon as they got burned? There was absolutely no explanation as to why these future-versions of the characters were chasing them in the first place. Are they just really angry or something?

It was a waste of a great premise. It could have been one of the great episodes. There could be all manner of devilish and outlandish creatures trapped deep in the TARDIS' labyrinthine hallways. It's infinite for God's sake! And it's been compromised! Strange beasts from the dark dimensions between space are creeping into the TARDIS! It's a bit like Lovecraft!

Failing the 'creature feature' angle, why not go for the 'time trap' approach. What was that film where the grieving mother gets trapped in a time-loop paradox on a yacht?

There was so much coolness they could have spread around with this episode *sigh*

The incidental characters were rubbish and annoying also
