A New World

They said the Earth was flat.

I needed to find out so water, food and supplies were prepared.

Goodbyes were difficult but so was life.

I left, crossing desserts, war-torn countries and jungles. Discovery pumped through my veins.

The sea stopped me but a man called Christopher helped.

There was no way back so in the new-country I settled.

Past memories faded.

I lived the dream but never forgot where I came from…

MANNING THE DIVIDE

I watch them go up, up, up.
I watch them go down, down, down.
Down to Earth, up to the stars.

Ascending to my station then
Stopping off at Luna Secunda,
Or Terra Antipoda, Substation Two.

And down again, to Terra Prima
That new city, the biggest on Earth,
The homeworld's belly button.

And me in the control room,
On the free end of the umbilical cord
Reading The Fountains of Paradise.

A Miserable Evangelist

The icy wave drenched Brother Timothy, yet again. The dragon ship was breached by even moderate waves. He felt miserably cold. He wanted to go home.

But he couldn’t. An oracle of perfect life truth had changed his life. He would not stop! He would proclaim this truth to the trolls at the ends of the earth.

His resolve stiffened.

Soon he received another drenching. The ends of the earth couldn’t arrive soon enough.

(Book) Ends of the Earth

Deeper into the cavern she plunged, fiery angel-blade drawn.
Spiritual and physical realms overlapped.

She found the demon where the roots of the Tree of Knowledge began.
His cold, black blade danced. He was whittling. Wood shavings surrounded him.

“My books need something to hold them up,” he spat. “These roots are dead, there is no harm.”

“Dead? You are making them from Lost Knowledge?” she asked.

She sheathed her blade.

Forever After

Before me an empty, infinite desert of dark, scorched dunes. A violent red sun glares in a fiery, foreign sky. The infernal scene sears my eyes.

We fled our dying world. That I remember. We watched Earth burn. The billions we deserted burned with it. I remember crying. Nothing else. My grey uniform, battered and torn, gives me no clue. Nor do my bloody hands.

I don’t know where I am.

Home I guess.

Starlight, Starbright...

It was foretold, our ending, and now it's here.

There have been riots and anarchy, love and coming together.

We know there's an afterlife, and we shall receive our rewards there, because the Angel appeared and told us so.

Our planet becomes a supernova in two days, and the bright light of our demise will travel across the universe, taking a thousand years to reach its destination.

It will guide three men to a stable.

Adam and Eve

It was not the end. Well, I guess that depends on your definition of the end. Sure all of humanity is dead, except for me, and her, but you know, sometimes I wonder if maybe it was a good thing. We get a fresh start. If I find her. I've heard her cries on the quantum radio, so I know she's out there. If I do, well, I hope she's into short fat guys.

The Wanderer of the Ways of All the Worlds' Confession

They say there lies a land, that's east
......of the moon, west of the sun, blessed
by kindly gods with plant and beast
......of poignant beauty, folk who rest,

but I have never known such land
among the all that I have spanned
......between the ends of earth and sea,
......for all are fallen, drear and dree.

The Wise One

The Wise One stood at the edge of our world, closer than any other would dare. His arms outstretched; a contented smile across his chubby face. Most of us were gathered there.

“Our end has come. Join me now and we shall not perish at their hands.”

I watched them. Their backs to the plummeting darkness, arms outstretched. One by one, they let themselves fall. I turned away then.

Let them come, I thought.

The Last Place on Earth

“This is it.”

“Here? I don't get it.”

“The first atom that clumped to another atom was in the core, it continued in an anti-clockwise spiral, with a certain degree of elevation. If you run the calculations and the retro-simulations the last atom would have settled on to the Earth's surface precisely here.”

“But.. but this is Slough.”

“I know, and it is the end of the Earth.”

In the Lost City of Z

They said, You are the last people living in balance with nature.

They said, You must teach us.

They said, How do you know English?

We showed them Colonel Fawcett, a madman two centuries old.

The civilised forgot they came for teaching.

Our warnings ignored, they tore apart the jungle to find the fountain of not-dying, the curse planted by the god who hated the earth.

In the burnt world, we hear his laughter.

Two Sides to Every Story

Eve crunched on her apple and stepped back to admire her handiwork. Beneath the cave painting of the large man wearing only fig leaves the caption read. “The wimp framed me.”

The man was weak, he sampled the forbidden fruit. When God asked Adam he had blamed Eve. Her children were being taught that her actions were why the Earth had fallen and would one day die. This set the record straight.

The Pointy End

The job had its perks. Corner office. Company car. Paid leave. Free travel - through space and time.

Once I’d seen history’s highlights, I thought I’d take it to the extreme. Head forward, to the end of the Earth.

I won’t spoil it. But I will say it seems pretty unavoidable. So I don’t feel guilty playing solitaire all day long, and still cashing my paycheck.

Because what’s the point, you know, in the end?

Boundless

A sphere has infinite sides, or none.

Earth holds infinite histories leading to infinite ends, yet only one beginning.

Our discoveries in quantum physics provided us with a glimpse of infinity – keys to parallel universes.

I sank into one. For a fraction of time, I felt like a god.

Then I was empty. The experiment succeeded, however, I found you with another. I thought our love was boundless, until all the ends of the Earth.

The Lament Of Vinson Massif

Luckily my wife died two years before the dead returned; before the solar flares increased. She fell from an apple tree on our picnic - plucking one just for me.

It’s taken me months to reach here: Antarctica - fertile land now but allegedly safe from the shambling corpses. Ahead there’s a beautiful woman standing by a sapling, beckoning me. In her hand she holds a promise.

A promise that looks like an apple.

To Strive. To Seek. To Find?

At the ends of the Earth the Angels of Peace still live, Grandfather whispered. We must seek them to save the world.

The ramblings of a dying man, everyone said, and they returned to fighting the Insectoids.

I didn’t fight. I searched. For years. Glaciers. Mountains. Deserts. Oceans.

Before me, the last island. I think I see bright, shining figures.

Above me, the Insectoids darken the skies.

The ends of the Earth?

Or its end?

The Certainty Principle

Ever wondered what you might have achieved in parallel universes, what greatness you’ve attained?

When the local mad scientist asked me what I really wanted, I said, “To see my other selves.” Incredibly, he delivered.

I’ve seen countless versions of myself, all of them dead, killed when I, by observing them, collapsed their wave functions and those of their Earths.

The plus side? There’s an infinite number of Earths to visit: I've become immortal.

Across Time

The soul finder again betrayed Benny to Clarissa, following, fangs extended maliciously.
'You've destroyed all those Worlds, every time stream I've crossed!’
‘You know my price. Your Gate ring.'
‘You would destroy every realm!' Benny cross shifted the gate, opening the mirror universe. Faced himself, with fangs extended.
Tearing the soul beacons from their throats, Benny forced the vampires inside; freed his human Clarissa, then slammed shut the gate.
He embraced his weeping Clarissa gently.
