The Fires of Heaven (Book 5) - Discussion Thread WITH SPOILERS

YAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! Brilliant!

And heh, yeah. That was the swooning Aes Sedai cover I mentioned a while back. I LOVE it! It's just sooo cheesy! Whoever heard of a swooning Aes Sedai?! :D I think she's supposed to be shouting to let Rand know about the Dragkhar in the sky, but... um... there are no dragkhar in the book. Then again, the artist never stuck to what characters look like or what the plot is. :D

Argh!! It can't end like that! I need to see what Ny is going to do to Mog! And damn, Ny really is such a BAMF, I love her. But gay, what happened to Asmodean?? Damnit!

Part of me is a little miffed that Rand managing to reverse time, though as soon as he channeled the wodge of balefire I knew that's what would happen. I wanted Mat to live of course, but it was such a shocking moment it felt cheap that it was reversed. And I have to say that part of me wanted Aviendha to be dead. I like her but she doesn't add a great deal. Plus this whole "three women have to share him" is ridiculous and I want him to just be with Elayne.

I knew Moiraine was going to her death even before she left the letters. I've always expected her to be the sacrifical one. But part of me doesn't think she's dead -- I never do when someone falls out of sight. Plus there was metal tower and Perrin's wolf dream when he sensed about the foxes and snakes. Course, even if there's a way back, Lanfear could have been the one who survived fighting and will turn up again.

I was getting seriously annoyed with Rand's "wah, I can't kill a woman!" but then I realised there is a reason for it, with one of Lews' last actions being killing his beloved. But even so I glad he's learned his lesson now and that the Maidens gave him a good talking to.

That post is full of mistakes, sorry :D Posting on my phone in a hurry!

Also, realised I forget to mention -- jesus, when Lanfear is pissed...skinning and tossing aside the full skin of the peddle dude! Eesh!

I want to finally be introduced to...Semirghe? I barely even say the name, never mind notice how to say it, but her. She sounds like the worst of the lot!

Also I really like the progress Egwene has made. I have a feeling that Siuan has plans for her to be the new Amrilyn (gah, I don't know how to spell half these words!) of the exiled half of Aes Sedai, but I think she could easily show that she's got a backbone to the do the job properly and not be another puppet on their strings.

Heh. Yeah, I was sooo eager to read the next book after that ending! Somehow I'd missed Asmodeon's death, though, so Seph made me go back and re-read it! :D I just thought laddio had wandered into a cupboard, and I was like, "Yeah, aaaand? He went to get some supplies, didn't he?"

As for the reversing time, I LOVED it! I needed them to live!!!! As soon as it happened, I was willing him to balefire the place rotten. I did a huuuuge sigh of relief when his friends were back. Especially Mat and Aviendha (I love Av. I hoped she and Min would share Rand without Elayne, cos Elayne's too selfish and "Oh, I'm a leader of Andor, don't you know!" I love the idea of three women sharing a man, though - it's a different society than most, although it's weird how Rand can't stick to one. :)

And YES! I felt the same, that Moraine would come back. After all, didn't Min have a vision about her that hasn't come true yet? Or is Min finally wrong??? As for the metal tower in Perrin's wolf dream - do you also recall a certain boat trip the girls were on in.... some book (I forget which)... where they saw a giant tower matching that description? (That's what early readers of the series spotted, having read and re-read the series every time a new book came out. We don't get that, though, since we only read it once.)

And oooh! BTW, you are spot-on for a couple of things, but I won't say what.

And you want to meet Semirhage, hmmm? RAFO. ;) I call her "Smear-idge", which makes Seph wince.

I better warn you, however, that Rand hasn't... um... finished not wanting to kill women. And not just because of Lews. I suppose it's his upbringing and the fact that he had lots of female friends? I dunno. I'd not be so fussy if men AND women were trying to kill me.

What I will end with, anyway, is to say that you will LOVE some of the things in the later books. I have a feeling one character in particular will stand out for you, too, like it does for me. Some characters have yet to come in to their own, really...

LOL! Don't mind me, just stepping into a cupboard for a moment...I'm dying to know who it was. Part of thought it was scary Forsaken Woman, but I hear that she doesn't really kill people, just...toys with them in horrible ways. OMG! Could it be Lanfear back already?? She'd certainly be the last person he'd expect.

Oh, yeah, I do vaguely recall another tower. I dunno, all these random things dotted around the place, it's hard to keep up ;)

I tend to say Sa-mer-idge!

Don't even know how to begin with Mog's name. Again, I just recognise it's there :D

And yes, all through that bit with Lanfear, I was moaning out loud (No One has heard many of my rants now) saying "for god's sake, Rand, she's killing you and your bloody friends, stop being so stupidly fussy just because it's a woman!"

I think the reason I want Elayne for Rand is because at least she actually had a ruddy choice in the matter (even if based on like, a three second glance). I knew the reason why Av was being so weird for so long was because was another who had ruddy fallen in in love with him, or 'had to'. Stupid visions. The lack of free will in the matter is what troubles me a great deal, I just can't like the situation at all, no matter how much I might like the characters involved (plus the fact that it seems to take up so much of the characters time and personality -- especially poor Min, I feel like she's a shadow of the awesome and for once, actually slightly different woman, character she originally was).

And Mo, hmmm? Heh. I say "Mow-higden". Apparently it should be "Mor-geddy-en", or something like that. I prefer mine. Sounds like a footballer. :D

As for Rand... yeah, his head needs screwing on the right way. "I won't kill women but I'll happily stand by and watch a female Forsaken KILL MY FEMALE FRIENDS/LOVERS!" Erm...

But I'm not too bothered by the women falling for Rand. I kinda see it as Rand/Rand-iterations-through-the-Ages always ends up with Min, Av, or Elayne....? Dunno. I remember the portal stone they went through once, and they saw thousands of lives played out, including ones where Rand married Egwene even though he felt it wasn't his true path... Perhaps he should always get with the three other women? And even though they perhaps love him because it's his Ta'veren nature drawing them in, they still love him - Min loves him fiercely, and I thought - rightly or wrongly - that Av was fond of Rand but thought she'd met him too late and he was already promised to another by that point, so she tried to hide her upset. She didn't know about Min's viewing, so she wouldn't have felt bound to love Rand. Maybe she just fell for a sexy strong leader, a man from her legends? (Why do women think he's sexy - he's not for me AT ALL! :p) Anyway, in Min's case, between book one and two, I figure she would have had plenty time to think about Rand since their chance meeting. She probably saw him as a sexy stranger she couldn't forget, especially once she had a vision of her loving him... :D

Anyway, Min DOES become something different, imo, and she is... useful. It just takes her a couple of books to get going and find her non-Rand talents. She's smart and knows what she wants.

What else? Oh! The other reasoning I had for Asmodean's murder was... who would want him dead the most? A normal person... or a Forsaken who doesn't like that he's teaching the Dragon expert weaves that he could use against them??? Or just a Darkfriend? Aaaand... didn't Lanfear suggest that Asmodean teach Rand? So, if your theory is correct, why would she then kill him...? Lots of questions! Dun dun duuuuun! (I could never settle on any one candidate.)

That first bit -- completely missed it; can't even remember what you're referring to, or when it happened! I could barely keep up with all the Tairens and Cahariens or however its spelt -- too many cities and too many lords! I was just looking up the Forsaken, though, trying to work out who was left. I'd completely forgotten that two of them died at the end of the first book!

Yes, Mo-higden is the closest to how I'd say it.

I was getting the feeling that Elayne was like, the er...I forget her name, but now I think about it was close to Elayne, too. So maybe the other two are from past times, too. But still, I don't like it :p

I say Lanfear, because she disappeared while royally pissed, so I wouldn't be surprised if she did come back and kill the guy who was supposed to be looking after Rand (and keeping him away from other women, maybe? ;))

Oh, urm... apparently I'm a doofus. You'll see what I meant near the start of the next book... Oops... I could have sworn it was *this* book!!!

Tbh, I'd thought the "falling into a burning doorway" was quite final. :D I never thought of Lanfear as the culprit for Asmodean. I always thought Moraine would be back - how, I didn't know - but Lanfear was gone, imo. Then again, you never know. You've been correct a few times, with some better than I guessed!

Like I say, I never trust falling out of sight deaths. I didn't believe Sirius was dead in Harry Potter for quite some time ;)

With regards to Asmodeus' death, Robert Jordan never actually says who did it. You have to wait until the Brandon Sanderson books- and even then, I think its just a note at the back of the books.

Or you can, you know, just spoiler it, like I did (still on Book 4, and I know how the whole series ends).

Aw, what! Why would you do that?! Did he just forget? Oh, hey, I need to kill off this character because he's not really needed, let's just have him walk into a cupboard and die.

I'm trying to avoid looking at too much -- even when I was looking at Forsaken names, I had my hands over most of the screen to avoid seeing anything I shouldn't.

He said it was "intuitively obvious" and decided to let readers figure it out on their own.

I remember waiting for Sirius' Mighty Return and Rescue... all the way until the end book.

As for the Asmodeon issue... Seph didn't realise it was a note in the Glossary (of the book I'm on, incidentally) - he kept saying I'd read it in this book. Thanks to this thread, he looked it up for me - and is shocked to say you're right, Jonathan.

I think Jordan wanted readers to figure it out and have fun trying to solve it, though (I know I would have done if I hadn't come into the series so late), knowing that he would eventually give a definite answer separately for those who needed it.

I'm tempted to flick to the glossary now. I never did suss it out! :D

Hoops - brilliant! For the WoT, you really need to avoid spoilers. I've tried soooo hard to do so, and I'm GRATEFUL!

Oh, apparantly, Seph says that back in the old days of years of (torture/agony?) waiting between books, all the WoTers had it pretty much 100% figured out. I suppose we're just too late to the party!

Unless we have our very own Asmodeon-guess thread and I won't look at the glossary. :D

I guess it wasn't (or isn't, I don't know how it plays out yet) a massive plot issue or the like, so it's a tasty morsel to give to readers in the meantime to puzzle out. But I think he should have given an answer eventually! Especially if you had to wait so long between books...each time thinking "this time we'll know!" and Jordan's all "Whatevs".

It's here, it's heeeere. Literally just got delivered (It was actually dispatched about an hour after I ordered it, very swift. A little battered -- looks like someone tried to take a couple of bites out of the cover -- but better than the last one!)

I was mulling over the 'long overdue' beginning and thought that maybe we'd finally get to see a little more about the Dark Lord himself. So just had a flick through the first few pages and sure enough I see CAPSLOCK. Ooooooooooh.

Have to resist for now, though. Need to do work, then reward myself with it later.

Hoopy I am glad you are enjoying them. And you are doing it right..bite the bullet and read them all in a row..I like it!
