Recommend me some horror books!

I would recomend The Charlie Parker series by John Connolly. They are dectitive novels with a massive dose of the supernatural layered through the series.

On the more traditional side The Talisman and The Black House are excellent reads. They are a collabortation between Stephan King and Peter Straub.

Re: The Red Tree

I hope you do!
Yeah, it was good. Just when I was convinced that constance didn't really exist at the end, I went back and re-read the editor's preface that stated that she did actually exist...

It's hard to tell what's real and what's delusion. And Kiernan doesn't make it any easier in her next novel, The Drowning Girl. I think Kiernan is on a streak right now that makes her one of the best fantasists working.

Good choice!

I didn't really warm to The Haunting of Hill House, although I do like ghost stories. I would recommend The House Next Door by Anne River Siddons in that area. Ghost Story by Peter Straub was alright, although not very frightening and very much in the Stephen King "Small town falls apart" mold. Actually, looking back at it, I felt that the sense of a community decaying in 'Salem's Lot was much scarier than the actual vampire, who seemed a bit camp to me. While King is good with atmosphere, I don't think his monsters are very frightening.
