simple question

Oooh, I like at home. That'll do lovely. Cheers, Mosaix. :) Feel free to derail for four pages, everyone. :D

Of course you could make it:

"United were at home to City and losing 6 - 1!" :)

Alc will be along any minute with his version, of course. :)

I think Ursa and mosaix have covered it, with the exception of the fact that Man U could be away at Liverpool.

And there you have most of my knowledge of football (although I do know the offside rule). ;)

I'd go with the first option: Man U, Liverpool.

but wouldn't you simply use 'and'? that is what we do for hockey games..
who's playing? its montreal and Toronto at the forum ..
or simply
Toronto at montreal ( montreal being the home team)
or
the leafs and the canadians

Alchemist! Help! :D

Did you not use the Alc-signal?

Clearly a Fantasy tale then. Similar to a bad dream I had two seasons ago. It was a dream, yeah?

Yes, for NI, it has to be these two teams. I'm assuming a crowded bar and this game guarantees it in Ireland. Something like 80-90% of Irish people who'd support an English team will support one of these.

I kinda agree with many posters. If he's a United fan, he'll think "it's the United Liverpool game." But that doesn't look great, so I'd use poetic licence and insert a hyphen or dash. That doesn't look great either but it's clearer.

Another option would be...

It was the big game: United v Liverpool.

I'd read the v as VEE.

One does see phrases such as "Chelsea and Aston Villa meet in today's Quarter Final", but it's only one of many formulations, some of which have already been mentioned above.

As an aside (and in the spirit of the thread ;)), the
<away team> at <home team>
seems to be the "official" way to describe games in North America (at least it is if the NFL is anything to go by**), but is not so in the UK, where the "official" naming of a game is
<home team> v(ersus) <away team>.
Indeed, it took me some time to find it normal, as opposed to gratuitously odd, to see games described in the NFL way.

Obviously, we do use phrase such as "Spurs is away to Stoke" and "Southampton is playing at Arsenal", but that's more in natural speech.

** - Which it may not.

Man Who? Liverwhat?

Nevermind. I'm sure it's not important anyway.

In Canada it would be Toronto/Montreal (or Leafs/Habs) unless you're from western Canada. But then no one is from western Canada.

uhm I am

You wouldn't have happened to have been in a choir in 2000 singing requiems in Vancouver would you? How epic would it be if you were the one who winked at me while queuing to go on stage for our combined number.

(I'm no help with springs question, so its good she's got an answer. The most i know about sport is where to stand on each field to sing.)

Haha, no I was not there winking at you in 2000. I am in western Canada but not that western. Also you do not want to hear me sing :)

I think we can get this to 3 pages

Pah, three... I trust the Chrons can do better than that.

Oh, and cheers Alc for the rescue. I was fairly sure there were only two football teams in England. All this Chelsea stuff made me doubt myself. Phew....

Yep three pages. Edit: well i kept deleting half my post (or more) because i couldnt think of anything useful to babble ;)

So your not coastal then. *sigh*

Even if that were true, Liverpool certainly wouldn't be one of them, not unless your stuck in the 80's. :p
