My sixth book: Das Boot: The Boat by Lothar-Günther Buchheim

This is the book that inspired the film of the same name and is an autobiographical account written by a survivor from Germany's WWII U-boat fleet. It is a stunning work and had me on the edge of my seat when I first read it - full of tension. I got a real sense of sympathy for the crew despite it being written about the 'enemy'.

It's a long story with plenty action interspersed with the detail of day to day life on a U-boat. But it's not really a 'war story'. It's about how people live and work under intense pressure and fear for their lives.

It's one of those books that you can open one any page and immediately become immersed in the story - I was going to say 'submerged'. :)
