She tried to ignore the voice, kept pulling carrots.

...“Sssee how juicy….”

She sighed, picked some peas.

...“Jussst a tassste….”

*******

“Wash up, dear. The Lord is coming for supper.”

“Smells delicious. I thought you didn’t like to go in the garden anymore.”

“That's no problem now — and I made a new dish!”

“You didn’t—“

“Of course not. God knows we can’t eat those!
......Here, taste – I call it ‘Ssserpent Ssstew!”

Purpose Unfulfilled

Rustling costly robes, chinking armour, stamping sandals in the cold morning air.

“Are you the king of the Jews?”

“My kingdom is not of this world; it is from another place. I came into this world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth listen.”

“ Thou art innocent of any crime. Release this man! How can I help, Adonai?”

Sigh. “You cannot help me. It is now too late.”

Re: September 2013 -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE

Mutatis mutandis

"I couldn't help overhearing before, Adolf..."

"What was that, Eva?

"Invading Russia, indeed! That nice Mr Dzhugashvili - you two have so much in common. You're not to be so unpleasant to him. Do you hear me?"

"Yes, I'm listening. Very well, dear, if you say so. Nasty cold place, anyway"

Beware Who Listens To Your Prayer.

Tall. Blond. Soft like a Christ-priest.

And very drunk.

‘See my ancestors embrace Christ. Built a time machine!’

‘A what?’

‘Ship. Sails history. See Christ cast down false gods!’

The Norsemen drew their swords. The blasphemous drunk continued regardless.

‘Prayed to Christ. Odin heard me! Stole my time ship!’

Swords lowered. Heads nodded. He believed in the All-father after all.

‘Sailed straight past Ragnarok. Gods only know how Odin’s altered my history.’

Blowin' in the Wind

Dylan's tune wafted in the breeze.

The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Nick smiled, watching the gathering crowd.

Alice kissed him on the cheek.

"What was that for?"

"I'm proud of you."

He shrugged. "I never could dig the trappings of adults."

"I spit on their drugs!" She spat.

The chanting grew louder. An adult stumbled past them.

How many men will these drugs take down?

He lifted his sign to the sky.

Errant Ordnance

Did you know Hitler was doing research into the occult?

I can’t remember if he is Mein Fuehrer, or my enemy. No matter now.

Allied bombs hit one of the labs. Hit something unstable.

The door was opened. They took control.

I cross the bloody fields of Normandy, my body moving without my direction.

I am not alone. Soldiers by my side, whispers in my head.

My thoughts scream a warning no-one can hear.

Re: September 2013 -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE

Invasion

The uprising in the north was squashed but we had no time to rest. News had come of an invasion in the south.

We rode hard to meet these intruders.

Battle was joined, they wanted me to stay clear but a king must fight. I heard a whistling, an arrow flew over my head. I saw the Norman leader our swords clashed.

His head now adorns the sea wall.

Heart's Desire

Pills. Whisky. Happy birthday, Tom.

"Please don't."

"Who-?"

"Sorry. I'm Melinda, your guardian angel. Let me help?"

"Can you send me back to try again?"

"Sarcasm? Tricky, but...see you in fifty years."

#

"So?"

"It's passed so quickly, but better. I'm married. Wonderful woman. Kids, one grandson. Jobs not brilliant, but hey."

"So you'll stick with this life?"

"Definitely. One question. How'd you know?"

Melinda smiled. "I listened to your heart, Tamara, not your words."

Sprechtechnik

“Hans! Mein Freund, I was hoping to find you.”

“Sehr Gut! How are you, Karl?”

“Are you free tonight? I have tickets to hear the new Chancellor speak.

“Why bother? I mean, he only came into office because of Hindenburg's death.”

“I know but he has some extremely interesting ideas on restoring Germany's former glory.”

“Really? I haven't heard anything about it.”

“Frankly, I'm not surprised. I afraid he's not a very good public speaker.”

Re: September 2013 -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE

A cosmic joke

'With respect, Lev Denisovich, I would probably hear what he is saying, if you kept quiet! Now he’s talking, about an eagle landing. Pfft. Calm down, comrade. Nothing has been left to chance, we know the exact spot. He’s spouting again - a giant leap for mankind, the arrogant so-and-so. I’d clout this one if I was locked in a rocket with him. Patience, he will look around, he has to. Ha! He’s seen it!’

A Pub in Domrémy

"Mon Dieu! These are grim times! France: on its knees to the English. What can be done Monsieur?"

The young knight looked up with hollow eyes. "Pray for a miracle and get drunk". He glanced at his empty tankard and then at the burly innkeeper.

"Of course sir". He grabbed a young maid and cuffed her around the head. "Joan! Stop listening to your silly voices and serve, or I swear I’ll knock you senseless".

Can't Help Falling In Love (with blues)

You tread upon my blue suede shoes
Down at Heartbreak Hotel
I ask if you will love me true
Instead you give me hell

Because I love you too much babe
I'm feeling all shook up
Here's hoping you're lonesome tonight
I'm crying like a pup

They say that only fools rush in
They said you were high class
'Twas only when you wore my ring
I knew the truth alas

Tick, Tock

Tick

The infernal clock marks each lost second.

Tock

Twelve years now…. The device in front of me almost complete.

Tick

Soon I will travel back with the cure

Tock

And save her.

Tick

I need a diode.

Tock

Someone get me a damn diode!

Tick

Thank god! Where the hell have you been!

Tock

My lab dissolves. Yellow, sterile walls replace it. Pills are offered. And taken.

Tick

I weep for lost time.

Tock

Christmas Eve, 1929

Mavis scratched her stump, memento of the Somme, 1925. "Listen, girls. Jerry's singing." She willed them: hear me, not the music. "She won't expect us tonight."

"Peace tonight. 's tradition." Ruby spat into the trench-water.

"This war's tradition. Enough tradition. Let's change something instead."

Murmuring agreement, the women reached for their guns, and slipped over the top, into the snow of No-Woman's Land.

Above them, the voices soared: "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht…"

The Roots of the Second U.S. Civil War

President Kennedy was convinced a Civil War was coming. Black violence and rhetoric were growing. His best hope the “Civil Rights Act” was stalled in committee. The problem group, Southern Democrats, listened to local voters, not to a Yankee President. Southerners believed real race riots were a northern city problem. The Texan, Vice-president Johnson, sometimes joked that it would an assassination, to get them to change. It was probably true. After Dallas it wasn’t funny.

FLAMES OF PASSION

With trepidation she stood at the gates, listening to the raging fires. Standing on tip-toe she could see intrusive, finger-like flames’.

She reflected on her life of debauchery; shamelessly and wantonly she’d chased the army, 1000 men, from King to varlet, she’d invited their abuse. Bewitchingly, she’d led them astray.

Repenting couldn’t save her.

Her voluptuous bosom rose as her breath quickened. Accepting her penance, she stepped forward, hearing Diablo’s contemptuous laughter “Welcome Jehanne Darc”.

The Listening Post

They’d intercepted the transmission late the night before, and McCoy had spent the hours since decoding it.

‘Hey, Tiller? I think I got it: ATTENTION ALL POINTS - OPERATION TRIKE STRIKE IS GO.’

Tiller’s eyes widened. ‘Get headquarters on the line, now.’

‘I don’t think so,’ said a sibilant voice behind them. The ceratopsians turned as a raptor commando emerged from the shadows. ‘Long live the Tyrannosaur Empire!’ he hissed, leaping forward.

He stepped from the nexus of causality onto the knoll, raised the gun and fired.

“I’m sorry darling,” John said to Jackie as he leaned toward her, “I wasn’t listeni...”

The bullet punched through his head as the world watched in disbelief.

He swore and stepped back into the nexus. How many more times was the damnable man going to take the bullet? To secure the time-line she had to die... yet never did.

Widow von Braun's boy

'Wernher, what are you doing in your father's safe?'
'Nothing mother.' He replied, slipping the tape reel under his shirt.

That evening he listened to his deceased father's voice;

Target elimination successful with Version 1. Coincidence - no, providence - supplied an iceberg so no cover story needed. One day the Empire will rise! Till then the blueprints will remain--

'Turn off your lamp and go to sleep!'

He slept restlessly under the burden of ambition.

Re: September 2013 -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE

History is written by the winner

"Why am I always the bad guy?"

"Because you haven't created anything yet."

"Like what?"

"History. It's written by the winner. Always."

"I did win. Sometimes."

"So, what have you created?"

"An argument?"

"I didn't hear a series of statements intended to establish a proposition."

"Hhmph. But I could win, you know."

"I don't think so, sorry."

"You won't like it."

"After my millenia? Be serious."

"Listen. Let there be darkness."

And there was darkness.
