MER-MURINGS

Wreathed in seaweed, she danced for their pleasure.

The sun glistened across her curvaceous body, whilst water slowly washed over her, revealing her naked breasts.

Her willing victims groaned in ecstasy, their desire apparent.

Promising more, she enticed the turning of the ship, forcing it against the rocks.

She cast out her long golden curls, entrapping the sailors, pulling them under; forever, to walk the sea-bed, in shadowy form.

One day, she’d meet her match…

He watched her sleep. Despite it all, he smiled, and for the first time he realised that not everything here would bring him pain.

He couldn't talk to her, true - couldn't touch her any more, no matter how hard he tried. That was something he could never get back.

But she was alive. He'd saved her, once and for all. His sacrifice had meant something.

If nothing else, he could take pleasure in that.

Casper, the Teenage Years

Looking in the mirror, Casper moaned. Everyone would see his spots. He popped the ectoplasm bubbles back to invisibility.

The full moon dance tonight at Hell School was going to rock.

He patted the skeleton key to the cafeteria blood bank... and grinned. Vanessa Vampire was on a liquid diet... he knew how to scratch Wolf Girl's itch, and Wendy Witch? There was some real magic there...

Oh, yeah! He was going to score tonight.

Castle of Dracula

"Everything, has been arranged."

"Excellent. You are now legally, this castle's caretaker. And my personal servant."

"Yes, Count Dracula."

"Every night we can have marvelous conversations about my life in Hungary, and, I can tell you about the Horrors of Hollywood. Hollywood, a place of lust, greed and despicable decadence."

"That sounds awesome, Mr Lugosi."

"Call me Bela. I was very fortunate to find, and haunt this Transylvanian castle. Now I can be Dracula, forever!"

Whirligig of Death

The first time I saw the spirits I was terrified too, but now it's all routine. Make sure the field markers are even, re-set the conduit emitter, type in the specified peramaters, translate the transient data to digital and brace yourself.

Showtime.

The audience screamed in revulsion and terror. The day the experiment worked was the best day of my life. I took home a thousand in ticket sales.

The Séance

She felt a pleasurable tingling creep up her neck and over her scalp as the insubstantial figure slowly appeared.

“Who are you?” She said but her voice did not sound like her own in this foreign place.

Without answering the figure seemed to draw nearer and she could sense other shapes gathering around her.

“What do you want?” She cried, her excitement turning to horror.

“We want to know how you died?” Came the reply.

My head hits the pillow

My head hits the pillow.

My eyes close.

My eyes open.

They are here.

We wander the shaded lanes, eat fruit, drink wine.

Dance and recline and refine and define.

Shatter and regather, matter and slather.

Ruminate, illuminate

Frame and declaim

Dissolve and resolve and return to my bed.

My eyes close.

My eyes open.

Ronald McDeadHead's Revenge

Brixton woke and there it was again, floating outside his bedroom window - a human head.
He watched through slitted eyes as his rage at the supernatural intruder mounted.
The head seemed to jeer as it spied his narrowed eyes, and Brixton snapped. He hurtled from his bed, crashed through the window, and died on the concrete below.
The head, a reflection of a clown’s face decorating a fast-food joint across the street, grinned inanely.

Spiritual Release

Elspeth yawned. "What did you say this place used to be?"

"It was a private house, but one of the owners was arrested for immoral earnings."

"So, a brothel?" She was enjoying the agent's discomfort.

"No, more a private members' club. They say it's haunted, which is why we allow staying a night before any offer." He looked resigned. "I suppose you won't be buying."

Elspeth considered the night's...events. "Oh, no, I'm definitely interested."

All the fun of the Fair

"Wow, a Fair. Lets go"

"Weird, granda says we haven't had one in 80 years"

"Who cares, come on"

Wide eyed, they wandered, rides familar but strange, operated by hand not a generator in sight. Strange sideshows, exotic animals, even the lights were odd.

What a night they had, scary, exciting but most of all fun.

As they left they turned for a last look , there was nothing to see but an empty field.

The House at the Edge of the Cemetery

Until they actually faced the infamous house, Billy and Jimmy were giddy and giggling.

Billy said, "Well, we going in?"

"I'm following you."

"Ain't it something!"

"Why is it so dark?"

"Scared?"

"Nah. Let's go."

Billy went first. Inside was musty. Outside the wind howled. A door creaked open. A powerful stench made them cringe. They went over and saw the suffering whore, beckoning to them.

Jimmy followed Billy in.

They had no choice.

In the Garden

It kills me (haha) to go back, but she still needs me. She isn’t ready. I make her laugh.

The call from beyond is stronger, and there is a danger I will be torn in two, lost in limbo, but I can’t deny her the pleasure of talking to her father at the bottom of our garden.

I can’t deny myself.

But when I hear her mother calling, I die all over again.

What I Did On My Halloween.

As a boy, I wore an old sheet and ate too many sweets.

As a man, I watched my son do the same, though I watched him too many times from the wrong side of my own death.

As a ghost, only on this day do I have the strength to ruffle his hair and kiss his cheek, and whisper that I love him.

He thinks it’s the wind.

Ghost of a Smile

Racing and winning had pleased him more than anything; “I shall never quit – God willing”, he used to say, smiling, when pressed for thoughts on his career.

Never quit, Beco”, I’d say aloud to no-one, faithfully absorbing every moment of TV coverage.

Years later, I’m working trackside maintenance at Tamburello; blessed with the ghost of his smile.

The unexpected howl of that long silenced V10 echoes loud; seems what Beco said about “never” was true.

The Freedom of Being Together

Careless, endless, rocketing through the world at their own pace, with no particular agenda, untethered. That was what they'd really missed. Freed from his paralysis and her dementia, for the first time in years they could really look at each other, feel each other's presence, love one another. They sat in the bough of a tree, swinging translucent legs, his head on her shoulder, silent, and watched the sunset. Together.

The Ballad of Bobby Ballantyne

He dodged the draft, he missed the war,
Did what he liked; laughed at the law.

Until they found him by the water
Fooling with the sheriff's daughter.

The County cops, they chased him down.
Off Hansen's bridge he drove, and drowned.

Now, summer nights, down by the levee,
You'll hear the roar of Bobby's Chevy.

It growls a tale 'bout pain and pleasure,
And how they come in equal measure.

A Real Ghost Story

Maria was drawn into the darkened hall. Why she was there was not clear to her. Maria’s life was going nowhere. Frankly, she was scared. She wasn’t expecting a spiritual touch. But touched she was; and goose bumps ran down her arms. Ennui fell away. A new life welled inside. She sang words she didn’t know. Her heart beat faster. Her life was changed. Joy flooded over her. She was filled with the Holy Ghost.

Girls and Boys Come Out to Play

As the moon manifested at midnight they came out to play; lost infant souls.

As ethereal globes they twisted and danced through mist enshrouded waters, giggling, singing in delighted concord.

Multicoloured hues filtered through the half-light, miniature rainbows, droplets of radiance.

The spark of life might have long departed, but innocence, freedom and joy of youth remained.

They sang songs then vanished into the morning light, but come tomorrow they would play again.

The Caretaker

Jerry couldn't contain his laughter as another bunch of kids ran screaming from the old manor. As caretaker for longer than he could remember, he knew for certain the place wasn't haunted. Didn't stop those thrill-seeking brats trespassing. So he played the ghost to scare them off. A simple pleasure, but these days it was all he lived for.

Job done, Old Jeremiah settled into his rocking chair, and drifted off into the ether.
