What did you blog about today?

That's a really interesting post, @The Big Peat , and I agree with what you've said. It's pretty much why I've taken a break from Space Captain Smith: I don't want to get into a situation where I'd be basically repeating myself but getting worse with every repetition. It seems to me that one answer is to sidestep, and write about minor characters in the same setting. The tone of Frazier is different to that of Cheers, but both work.

I've been pondering this one, as I feel like you and Stephen have both taken a different angle to where I was thinking. I mean, it's true that constant repetition of self is why the Eddings' charm wore out on me... but that was on book 19. Gemmell wrote the same story again and again, albeit with variations in setting, and his best was... book 24, I think. He did go downhill for me after that but due to a slight shift in protagonist, and I know people who find his last the best.

I'm going to have to ponder more. To me it seems tied to conscientiousness, and not taking storytelling shortcuts, with stale series being a symptom. But I could be wrong.

Anyway, since I'm here

Two posts on approaching genre - very pleased with the second one, albeit worried it's echoing what everyone knows
