What are you working on right now?

Mine has become a trilogy after 30 years of research from just a single short story idea I had. (Talk about that 'procrastination' post)
It's a SF that follows the future to present to past format were the future and present link in part and return to the past in a continual now concept.
It centers around a tech that is alien to humans and respected alien cultures they encounter. An alien-alien tech. The tech can't be reproduced, but only partially copied in the same way with the same outcome by the non-origin cultures in the trilogy. They don't know how it was made or what it was for. They can only get it to do one thing; spin.

The 1st two book also introduce other smaller tech's for the origin culture to add to the puzzle. The 'what' starts to be seen and 'how' is still unknown. But more is known in the 2nd book and it all comes together in the 3ed, that brings us back to book 1 and 2.

The origin culture of the tech is 1000AD American SW meets applied quantum physics kind of ish...

Pleased to report that the muse returned from her Christmas break and another 1000 words of Commander Rykoff got written today.
(A task speeded on it's way by the strategic removal of the new 12 string guitar from the writing area :giggle: )
Had to do the same with my penny whistle and mandolin...

Just finished a first attempt at a submission to the Kraxon SF magazine in the thread above -gonna need a bit of work but 1000 words is a decent target. Been finding the novel writing a bridge too far, every time I sit down to write I've forgotten what was going on. Think it's more a reflection on the quality of the tale than memory;)

I have two projects on the go. One is a historical novel set in the 'golden age of piracy' (sorry, not sff). It was a fairly short period (end of C17th and early C18th) which allows me to have a single character interact with several notorious villains of the era and be present at many significant events. Fans of George Macdonald Fraser's Flashman novels will understand what I mean. For light relief I'm working on an erotic novel; the second in a trilogy. Actually that one is in the sff genre.

Hi Guys,

Just lost a whole month due to an infection. Unbelievable!

Had a pimple or a boil on my back which itched abominably, so I scratched it - mostly by rubbing myself against doorposts like a cat since I couldn't reach it. Roll on a little bit to the visits to the doctors and bottles of antibiotics, and then when they failed to a week in hospital where they cut two absesses out of my back - one the size of a golfball - and then two more weeks lying on a couch half naked, barely able to function. And even now I have absolutely no strength and every time I try to walk anywhere I'm tripping over the cords from my cyborg bandage (no kidding! It's a bandage on my back that's connected to a pump that sucks the endless ooze I produce out!).

Ye gods! What a Christmas / New Years! But just yesterday I started writing a little again - only a few paragraphs and my fingers can't seem to find the right keys but I didn't fall asleep in mid sentence, so that's a positive.

Hope you lot are having a better start to the year. And always sterilise your door posts before you scratch!!!

Cheers, Greg.

Working on the issues of point of view, and word tense in the story I wrote and put in Critique. Those issues stood out with the people that critiqued it.

I misheard something the other day and thought it would make a good joke for a comic strip but couldn't think of any way of doing it that wasn't either incredibly crude and unfunny or just plain offensive so I shelved it until I realised that my failure to make this this work was the joke* and I had a two page strip on my hands. Roughed it out on a piece of paper at work a couple of days ago, rewrote and tightened it up last night and I'll set to work drawing it tomorrow.

*90% of all humour is based on failure - the other 10% is knob jokes.

A very silly story about a magical highwayman. I've reached 40,000 words now but don't expect to get further than 70,000.

I'm also preparing to self-publish a novel called The Imposters, a sort of space spy adventure about a man with no memory and the eccentric android who helps him. I think it's the best thing I've written for a while.

A narrative based on Cornwall, UK, but set a thousand years in the future called Surf Wars, you may have guessed it's a star wars parody

Just completing two sets of wargame rules; ‘Then Victory Follows’ (WW2) and ‘Hell In Miniature’ (ACW), both titles based on quotes.

Various projects proceeding incrementally, as I haven’t had the enthusiasm for a long, dedicated, writing session for a while now.

I finished The Cult of Hahn (at 112.5K). There is a companion book of epic poetry (The Book of Cyrus) that features in the novel, and I'm considering writing a chunk of it, but probably not the whole thing. It is basically the bible of the Hahn universe, and I can't even fathom writing that much poetry at this point. I have about 4000 words of it (from the chapter prologues in Hahn, plus a single unused poem).

I'm a bit tired right now, but I have started the final book of the Ezzie Dryar series. That is a bit stupid so soon after finishing Hahn, but I had an idea for the beginning, so I started it. Once that fizzles, I'll return to The Fantastical Adventures of S-69 Lost, which stands just short of 80K, but I still need to find a logical point to end the first book. It's time to start rereading it.

Working no 4 of the series in my sig line, provisionally titled 'Locations for Galactic Empires'. It was supposed to be a short booklet, little more than a descriptive list of the views and conditions from various parts of the galaxy, but it's ballooned and I am now designing a system to generate fairly realistic star systems with up to 4 stars packed close enough for realistic sub-lightspeed travel between their habitable planets. I've concluded that I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to keeping any kind of schedule - but I'll admit: I am having fun :)

I'm finishing up the second-to last chapter of my first sf novel, like ever. Tons and TONS of action, I have every scene planned out and storyboarded, and that's probably why it's taking so long lol. About 90% finished with it and God will I be relieved when it's done. After that just have to tie up some loose ends with the last chapter and focus on editing/publishing, which should be a boatload of fun for a newbie like me lol. Also damn, the veins in your arms dissappear when you're going through withdrawals? f*ck that's metal.

I’ve been playing ‘proper’ war games (with rules and dice and everything) for 50 years now. My, doesn’t time fly!

In terms of ‘publishing’ I can send you a copy if you like...
I didn't know you did wargaming, Reiver. There are some very interesting rules out there these days. Are you going to publish them?

I'm writing two long stories and a short story. Yes, all at once, Yes, stupid.

I started the second because I struggled to find a good ending for the first. (I have since found it.) I wrote the short story to find out whether what I am writing is at all interesting to anyone apart from me. So far, I have found no one who will critique it.

Is this sort of madness common among writers? Happily, I have no deadlines and write for fun! Even though no one reads what I write, it satisfies my soul.

Hey Ho, back to my story...

We do have a Critiques section here, if you're looking for feedback on your work, though it isn't open to you quite yet, as only members with 30 counted posts may start a thread there (not all posts count for this purpose). We do have a limit of 1500 words per extract per thread, so if your story is longer than that it would have to go up in 2 or 3 instalments (though we usually advise newcomers only to put up around 600-800 words in the first instance, as by and large the longer the excerpt the fewer members can find the time to read and comment on it). However, do bear in mind that once a short story is on the open boards it's effectively published, so if you were hoping to be able to sell the story, it's best not to go that route. Instead, start looking around for a writing group where you can get help -- if need be, start one yourself and see if anyone here wants to join you!

And before I forget, welcome to Chrons!

Thanks for the info; I will consider posting the short story when I can.

I'm still finding my way here. So far, the experience has been good!

Same here for me as well. Hope to read your published works and hope you'll read mine...in time! Good story telling you.
