What are you working on right now?

Scratch that, came up with a better idea...
scribble scribble scribble

Also, trying to get my mountain bike shifting between something other than the middle gears so I can ride a trail to work.

Did ya get the shifter sorted? Take it ya tried a new cable and the wonder cure that is wd-40.

'Working' on a stand up comedy/ SF bit for next Tuesday. It's sort of writing but a lot easier as you don't need to write it down so can be done while doing simple tasks. Am trying to show the reader something familiar/ then slowly twist reality/ then full throttle science fiction -have only managed to do it a couple of times but it's where I want the writing to end up ...one of these years;)
Flyer is here, tis 5euro in but if you're broke give me a shout and I'll sneak ya in:)

Negative. I tried a new cable but it's still wonky. I might've bent the derailuer when I had it out a couple years ago or maybe the shifters are starting to show their age. I'm debating just living with the three gears either top, bottom or middle. The trail I can take to work is a "rails to trail" trail so it's uphill but a very slight one.

On subject - debating doing a bit of change to the current story to add a smidge of cosmic horror to the big baddie. But that's just taking notes to the side and grumbling about it in the shower unless I can do it without bloating things necessarily.

Pity, reckon it'd be worth sorting if ya can -if the local bike mechanic is sound they should put ya right; I've been using a gravel bike with a busted derailleur off road for a few years. It is possible but tricky, and the inevitable outcome is giving up (need to take my own advice). Good luck with the cosmic comedy baddie. I reckon the only downside to that is it hoovers some of the tension outta the plot ...which might also be an upside;)

That's done now -time for a 300 worder about magic mushrooms. The author who gave a writing course I took last year said that one way of bringing people along with a story is to try make it funny. I reckon stand up is a good way of testing to see if it works ...some Irish Space Cadet training (Warning: contains cursing, and dodgy science)

I've been poor in my output lately. Mostly because from June I was working on my synopsis and statement for the Gollancz sub for my Victorian horror. Got it in on the penultimate day and just took a while to relax. Started again on third book in earnest today.

450 odd words per day seems sort of do-able, but I'd still struggle to hit it. Looks like solid output to me. Have ya heard Victoriocity?, it's a world away from horror and the queen is a bonkers SF version but I reckon it's really well written and acted, good for a giggle on a commute when ya get tired of writing (y)

Still with book two in my series, it's now got the working title of "The Legion". 27,000 words or so in, and I'm, sorry MC, is currently getting frustrated by the popstar he has handcuffed in his spare bedroom...

Messing about with illustration styles when I should be writing. I'm still looking at the second draft of my first novel but I've had a couple problems with it so I've been trying to do other fun things while I try to plot. I think I'm getting closer to figuring out some of my issues in the first draft though so hopefully I can get going again.

Draft 2 of that story I've been writing for ... four years now (If you count the start as the initial recorded notes).

If you are a starting author I can tell you that practicing writing made it better for me and I got better by forcing myself to write (ideally) every day. I don't get to write everyday, but I make more progress by sitting down regardless of my mood and pounding out a page or two.

My initial target was 200 words a day. This year my daily word counts are typically between 400 and 1000.

As I improve (in my eyes) I also get more joy from the writing, so it is, often, a positive feedback loop.

I set a goal of looking for agents this year. That may be too ambitious, but the year is only half done so we shall see.

Taking the feed-back I received from the 75 and 100 word critics I requested (thanks everyone!) and revisited my novel again, only to see the same problems there too.
Now I'm working on the emotions and purpose of the MC and supporting characters, as well as developing an emotional/psychological setting within the novel and chapters also. Not going overboard with it, just enough. I hope!

I've never finished anything I've started writing. I look back on stuff I've half-finished over the years, and it reads a lot better than I remember at the time. I promise myself I'll finish something some day, but I haven't yet. At the moment, I'm trying to write a fairy tale fantasy from the perspective of the "main" character's bully/rival.

Sounds interesting. You'll write it! Just take your time and pace yourself.
You're in good company here. Spend some time over at the Writing Discussion threads. There are plenty of accomplished writers there that are more than willing to help. And try your hand at the challenges and workshops too.
And take some time for yourself; your writing will become more productive and creative also. :)

I will. :) Thanks for the advice and encouragement.

Just outlined a short story that’s been rattling around for a while, shooting for around 3000 words and with the ending I’ve got right now it might end up more horror than scifi. We shall see!
