Discussion Thread -- Seventy-five word writing challenge -- February 2014

Now to relax for the month, for a change.

For once I'm not happy. I like the dance bit, but the rest is a problem. I'll knock something up, I don't know when, but I will....

I'm off to play with my spaceships and RAY GUNS and maybe lie down for a bit.

I worry myself sometimes.

Well... I'm posted. I've no idea if it fits the bill or not, but when a bolt of inspiration hits I just roll with it.

Right I'm off, Irish dancing off....

What? How many have posted already?

I seem to be inundated with stuff to write at the moment... should I do this or finished the Sekrit Santa first? Or the short stories I'm doing? Not to mention reading through the 300 worders AND voting. And Perps reading project.

Not to mention works and stuff.

Comments you say....

Might as well give up on sleep, it's a waste of 6 hours anyway.

(Love the challenge this month incidentally, already have an idea.)

well bowler, i liked it, whether it fits the bill or not...

mine's in now and not sure if it gets into the genre either. but, the story wanted out. it's 7am, my messed up circadian rhythms have had me up since 4:30, and i'm sitting on the verandah looking out at a tranquil tasman sea. plus it looks like it's going to be a nice day, so i'm happy...

AMB -- In clear, realistic language, the author shows us how the power of a myth goes beyond its truth.

Karn Maeshalanadae -- An elevated tone is used to present the fact that even superhuman characters may have their all-too-human flaws.

alchemist -- This story makes the reader think, offering us an evocative and mysterious ending.

Mirannan -- A dream-like, poetic flight of fancy lifts this tale to the heights of imagination.

Bowler1 -- The author boldly takes on a pop culture phenomenon in this dark, sardonic satire.

Hex -- The jumping rythym of this strikingly original story fits its cautionary theme.

Mith -- With a dignified mood, the author allows us to experience the awe of confronting the extraordinary.

Mr Orange -- The despair of the narrator is excellently conveyed to the reader.

What a theme! I feel rather intimidated now... luckily I'm not a professional writer. At least I can tank this without losing my job...<ulp>

I could have exchanged the genre and the theme and then where would we all be? In trouble! Except Phyre, obviously. He'd have been fine.

Yes, I think Phyrebrat would have a distinct advantage in the genre of Dance, and could undoubtedly come up with a dance themed in mythic fiction. :D How he would post it here is beyond me, of course, but that's his problem.

Well seeing as you bring it up  ....in 2010 I produced a duet about a fight between Rameses III and Kali using butoh, vogue (the Pharaoh) and kathak (Kali, Northern Indian temple dance that I train in).

Anyway the piece was called Terrible Gods and a little of the early rehearsal footage is here for anyone interesed....

Kali seven count choreography - YouTube

Your faith in me is touching TDZ. But while Mythic Fiction is clearly going to pose no problems, "Dance" as a theme may stump me.

I hate to admit it, but I feel exactly the same...

Now to relax for the month, for a change.

You owe me my street cred; when I read your story on the overground from Hackney I blurted tea out at the punchline, followed by one of those very unattractive chokes. The carriage was packed

Well, I'm idealess. I wish my brother was still here as he was a lecturer at the British Museum ;)

pH

I think it'd take a lot than that to make you lose street cred, phyrebrat ;)

Thank you Mr. Orange, I appreciate that.

Poor old Phyrebrat, I have to admit to some unfair expectations regarding your post.

alchemist -- This story makes the reader think, offering us an evocative and mysterious ending.

Thanks Victoria. Based on this and another conversation I had this morning, it seems my ending is not as universally understood as I intended! :D

Took me a couple of reads, but I thought I got it. I might not have.

...it seems my ending is not as universally understood as I intended! :D

After Phyrebrat and his tea, I put "Big fish little fish cardboard box" into Google and found some very strange YouTube videos.

Bizarrely enough, it doesn't seem to be a reference to a Dr Seuss book (though I'm sure there is one called something like that) but to a way people dance(d) at raves. I think.

Anyone? (except alc, obviously).

(there was even a video of Bob the Builder...)

EDIT @springs -- really? It's trendy? There was a question from someone who'd been to a Haven holiday camp saying they'd played the song non-stop there and the kids had loved it. That was in 2005. I kind of assumed it was the ravey equivalent of that song about chickens and deckchairs that only the truly ancient among us will remember. Hmm.
____

And thank you very much for the review, Victoria, and the kind words, TDZ :)

Hopewrites, is going to love the "Dance" theme

Right you are. Ideas twirling in my head as I type this, got to follow Hex's link to be sure my ideas are within genre, and then try and do justice to the imagery that popped into my head, and figure out what the story is inside it...

but in love none the less.

Thanks Victoria. Based on this and another conversation I had this morning, it seems my ending is not as universally understood as I intended! :D

I got it, but then again, I did quite a lot of box shaped dancing in my time. Insomniac by Faithless comes to mind. Ding, ding, ding... Dong.... I used to love it. I wanted to dance to that at my wedding but the very new Mrs was having none if it.

Thank you TDZ also.
