Are bookshelves becoming obsolete?

But DVDs are easy to shrink shelfspacewise!

You need A5 ring binders, A5 poly pockets and punched CD holders. I get 20+ DVDs (with all the sleeves) to a folder. The folders are about the same width as 2.5 standard DVD cases. So that's getting on for a 10 fold reduction in shelf space. These are the ring binders I use:

The pockets and disc holders I found in a poundshop and bought so many (at that price it would have been rude not to buy them!) I'm good for the next couple of years at least.

And yes, all my DVDs are in alphabetical order. (Even my to be watched pile.) Finding what I want is easy too.

If ever I want to lend a DVD to anyone I just slip the sleeve and disc back into an empty case.

I agree that shelves should be artistic. I keep more than just books on mine. Art suplies, gifts, tea sets, all sorts go into the shelf. Books sorted by series, author and genre and surrounded by bits that go with their emotive feel.

I agree about the dvd/blueray/cd case thing. I have all my cases stored away and the discs in a three ring binder that hold 8 discs to a page (4 to a side) though I'm constantly resorting them as they are filed by the mood they put me in.

I prefer keeping DVDs in their cases - I think many look as nice as books. BUT - almost all of our purchases are box sets anyway, which is quite a lot of compression. The complete Babylon 5 worlds - that is BIG - but I'm not convinced a ring binder would be a gain.
Also, I'm not an enormous fan of ring binders either aesthetically or in terms of the clip going sproing and everything falling out. :)

So it will only be the ones with boring covers that would end up in a drawer - or the ones that are on the bookcase between the wall and the sofa and you can't see and can barely get at anyway.... and then we can try and find wallspace for that book case somewhere else.

I will admit I do tend to slide the crap into the ring binders. The stuff I'm happy for friends and neighbours to see that I own stays on the shelves. Do I really want the mums of my primary aged kids' school chums seeing I own quite so many films with 'Zombie', 'Cannibal', and 'Ninja' in the titles? No, the Disney films and all the long French art stuff stays on the shelves, the cheesy sleeze gets filed.

As for the look of the binders - I printed out a poster from 'Forbidden Planet' to scale. Sliced it vertically and attached the slices to the backs of the binders. When they're on the shelf they look quite smart (I like old movie posters) and it's easy to keep them in order as the picture doesn't make much sense if they are put back the wrong way.

I like the slice a picture up idea. I'd never find the time to do it, but I like it.
