Death of an Art Form
By
R.T. Lee

Philosophy died ages ago. Few people were thoughtful enough to even notice its passing.

We lost Science Fiction a while later, as people became too lacking in basic math and problem solving.

Historical Fiction soon followed. And the inscription read, “Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.”

Only Horror remains and that reduced to one necrotic zombie apocalypse after another. It can’t last.

No doubt about it, reading’s kicked it.

My Name is Death

I wandered into the melee
Blood and death and sweat and pain all mixed in the blender you could call a battlefield.
I touch man, a child, a horse.
Its part of the job, cutting the soul from the weak.
Funny thing is they always look the same.
Shocked or disappointed it doesn't matter,
after all dead is dead.
My name is death, I harvest souls.
Its nothing personal, just the way of the game.

A Voice Beyond

He placed her cairn’s final stone.

“You promised to never leave me,” he thought to himself.
“I will never leave you.”
He had stayed while his spear-brothers rode east pursuing the trail.
“Erazma betrayed us all. He lowered the gate, let them in.”
With strengthening resolve, he mounted his steed.
“They split up: he went west.”
He felt some unknown force leading him west.
“Avenge me.”
East at his back, he began to ride.

All Souls, Or None

Death...Thanatos swallowed heavily, cursing himself for being unable to cry.

It was not as if he wanted to take this one. Indeed, it was all he could wish for her to live longer. But his job was his job, and he was to take all souls...or none at all.

Suddenly, the girl walking by his side smiled and hugged him.

"Where are we going, Daddy?"

Death takes a holiday.

The Customs Officer opened the passport, and compared the photo to the person in front of him. Empty eye sockets stared back.

‘Are you travelling alone, sir?’

FOR NOW

‘What’s the purpose of your trip?’

A SHORT HOLIDAY

‘You can’t work on this visa.’

I KNOW

He stamped Death’s passport.

Three days later, Death’s short holiday ended when a defrosted palaeo-virus escaped the lab.

Nobody lived long enough to enforce Death’s visa restrictions.

Talking Creatures Trilogy of Death

ROACH

"Mmm, cake crumbs. Uh-oh, I've been seen." (runs) "Must, reach, cover of darkness! AHHHHHH!" (crunch)

The SQUIRREL

"Gotta hide these acorns across the street. Eh, bright light. Wha? AHHH! MY NUTS!"

"You hit something. Back the car up mom."

"Wait! NAAAAAAH!" (KRUN-SQUISHT)

The BAT

"Nicely warm in this house."

"A bat, kill it!"

(whack) "Ow!" (whack) "OW! Must flee!"

"It talks! It's possessed!"

(whack) "OW! Not the face." (BASH, stomp, scrap, flush)

The Immortal Question

Aged, bone-weary, I finally unmazed the secret climb to the Eagle of Gwernabwy, and demanded knowledge.

Guffaws echoed. ‘You’ve spent sixty years seeking me …’ Mirthful flapping … ‘to ask why death exists?’

‘You’re accounted exceeding wise.’

Laughter screeched. ‘Your entire life! And I ageless! What know I of death, dunderhead?’

Enraged, I unsheathed, stabbed. ‘And now?’

‘Ach!’ he gasped. ‘Epiphany! Death exists because —’

He rattled, expired.

Now I'll never understand.

Still … roast eagle. I'm starving.

Blow, Bugle, Blow, Set the Wild Echoes Flying, And Answer, Echoes, Answer, Dying, Dying, Dying

Smoke rings rose up from the soldiers' cigarettes, forming watchful angels overhead. (Were they angels, or something else?)

Shots echoed in the distance.

The soldiers crouched down in their foxhole.

"Got another one of them smokes?"

"Sure."

They reached across the foxhole. Their fingertips touched, exchanging a glowing stick.

"Damn good stuff."

"Yeah."

An explosion ripped through the foxhole. Their broken bodies climbed out and continued to fight, rejecting death itself for an unknown cause.

Aftermath of the Battle of Doedensdahl

Sun pierced the clouds,
and revealed the earth once more.
Although one finds it in his heart,
that it should have been better
had this world never seen the sun again.

The unfathomable numbers of corpses
was too much for ones heart to bear.
The utter size of some piles
dwarfed even the greatest of men

One could not think of what one saw
as men and women
for indeed twas but the new earth.

What Death Cannot Divide

Hellonerf laughed jealously, wrenching the baby from her sister’s womb; watching her bleed to death.

King Grimm married Hellonerf in hasted grief.

In daylight hours baby’s relentless cries, echoed through castle walls.
Twixt twilight and dawn, the baby slept peacefully.

Mystified, Hellonerf lay in wait, seeing the babe nestled in her mother’s bosom.
But in the morn, the babe was dead.

Deception discovered; Grimm plunged the knife into his heart, evermore to follow his wife.

Rebirth-

So much pain…

It's gone?

It's gone!

So much light…

The unicorn opened her eyes.

Too many hues. Too many sounds. So much to smell and feel and be and… wait. Am I a unicorn? Is this heaven?

Suddenly an arrow pierced her side.

So much pain…

It's gone?

It's gone!

The griffin opened her eyes...

Suicide by Hero

"Run, you fools." The silver bullet flicked off Malan's hide as he paced towards them. "Who dares to fight me?"

"I dare." The hero braced himself to drive his wooden stake into monstrous flesh.

Death slipped through Malan's grasp. No. With moan strengthening to snarl, he turned to smash the hero.

A scrawny boy crouched over his fallen protector, gripping a bone blade. Malan laughed. "Immortality's a curse, but third time's the charm."

Death Goes Hungry

Death padded in as a tiger; supremely confident. This was his favorite guise. The solitary form apelings would serve him well tonight. It wasn’t meat Death craved. It was fear.

Something was wrong. Their fear was nearly absent. In a lamplit corner Shereads opened a book, a forbidden book, from the Great Beyond. Slowly the ancient words wove their spell against death’s fear. “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”

Deathwatch

Look at you, standing there with your scythe.

Guess that means I'm not getting out of here.

Well, you just hold your ... horse.

My friends are looking for me. They'll dig me out.

My wife is waiting at the bottom of the mountain.

My son's game is tomorrow.

Yeah, go ahead -- look at your watch.

Did I pay the electric bill?

How will they--

Would you stop that?

It's not all about you, you know.

Dead Unlucky

"We can live forever!"

"What? You’re off your head."

"Seriously, we can."

"How?"

"Kill Death."

"You're having a laugh, aren't you? Kill Death. What, sit up and wait for the Grim Reaper, and then kill him?"

"Exactly!"

“Get a life.”

“Yours will do.”

“Wait! What are you... urgh...”

“You Called?”

“Yes! Take that! And that! And... why aren’t you dying?”

“I’m already dead.”

“Oh... small flaw in my plan, then.”

“But not mine. Come along.”

Old Things

Necromancy. The least alluring of the Arts, the paths I tread both live and dead, not one not two but three entwined where ribbon ends and darkness blinds. Let me tell you about my father. My father made dead rabbits dance at country fairs. My father would read petty-fortunes in dying guts. Once at a gathering of the men when the meal was done he had the bird carcass stagger. Around the table, calling out.

Limbo

A ghastly figure lay with wide, unblinking eyes, staring.

“Death cannot reach her; the incantation was pure.”

“Yet she’s so lifeless,” whispered Tritan.

“She refuses to live; her state in limbo.”

Tritan began to cry, thinking the horror of such a fate.

“Don’t weep. The fact her frame remains means there is hope. Life is ready to spring.”

Tritan wiped his tears, knelt down and kissed the figure gently on the forehead. Then walked away.

An Unspoken Wish

Blood. War. Loss and tyranny,
The endless fight consumes.
“Will I find serenity?”
He says with tears of gloom.

Cold. Dark. Blinding light,
Of magic as it flows.
Streams of power kill his sight;
And to the gates he goes.

Confusion. Death. Pain and fear,
His body lay to waste.
For he who wanders, it isn't clear;
The path that follows haste.

“Peace… At last… Now I’m free!"
And he lay his head to rest.

Death and the Matron

Matron stroked her fob watch, symbol of equivalent timepieces down the eons.

How fitting, headquarters in the heart of this fortress dedicated to holding her at bay. With henchpersons - Famine dominated hospital kitchens, while Pestilence had always been resident. Only War, masculine facet, gallivanted outside, seeking clients.

Symbolically they were omnipresent, as TV news illustrated. Practically, all the 'omni's left emotions unstirred; this was Home.

The watch pinged; surgical three, another botched operation.

A Weapon's Bane

The old warrior sat wounded, holding himself upright by his sword.

He looked at it, grinning.

It was his father’s sword, passed on to him.

The sword had seen enough death for two men.

He looked around at the corpses strewn throughout the battlefield.

He looked back to the sword, and pitied it.

The old warrior mustered the last of his strength and snapped the sword on his knee.

The weapon had suffered enough.
