How long's a driveway in the US?! I park on the road, but mum parks on our drive.
 
Well, most of them aren't that long, but I do live in a rural area, and some driveways can be pretty serious.

(Ok, I was going to say "they reach all the way to the road".) :D
 
You'd think roads like the one in Mouse's picture were due to a lack of land in the UK. However, in my home county, Bedfordshire (477 sq.miles, 1,235 sq.km), there some narrow-ish roads (still two-way) with enormous verges on either side: the boundary hedges can be up to 100 feet apart. I think the right of way for these roads was wide because they'd originally been used for driving (as in cattle drive) livestock to market. When it came time to metal the road, the lack of traffic at that time (and, probably, a lack of money) meant that only the central section was converted to a modern road.
 
We have cattle drives here! They just go down the highway, but they do take up a lot of territory on the sides, as well. There are definitely some roads up in the mountains that are just single-lane dirt but with those wide margins where the cattle come through.

What does "metal the road" mean?

Err, yes, I've driven you all off-topic here, haven't I? I keep forgetting this isn't the other thread in the Lounge. :D
 
Metalled (metaled) a. (of a road) Surfaced, tarred, covered in stone or crushed rock (usually tar-coated).
 
Oh -- paved! One would expect it to have something to do with metal, or would that be asking too much? :D
 
But over here, its the pavement** that's paved, not the road.






** = sidewalk. Speaking of which.... On my journey to Exeter, there were quite a few places in towns/villages where the road was too narrow for pavements (although wide enough, apparently, for pedestrians to walk on the road on their way to or from the shops).

I only recently discovered the delights of going to cons and I'm very pleased to find one so close (just across the bridge) so I'll be coming to this one. :)
 
Should I ask what the road over the bridge looks like? This thread is dangerously close to being back on topic again after my derailment.... :D

When is this thing, anyway? I want to know when to expect pictures of the Chron meetups.
 
Because of the excellent reports I've read, I'm considering going there on the train. Means leaving at 6.50am, to get there by 9.39, but I can read a book or two. Also means I can have a drink in the bar, and sleep on the way home...:)

Oh it's a big shiny motorway. No exciting hedges or anything.

But I will actually be coming by train which I'm fairly sure goes under the water rather than over it so that's something.
 
Eeek! Two people going by train -- I'd better stop talking about derailments, then!

Trains under the water. You silly people, go on now. :D
 
While at Loncon3, heard that Bristolcon have sold more tickets for this time of year than ever before. So it looks like being busier this year than ever before...
 
Better late than never, but I've now booked train and convention tickets, so I'm going! Those railcard discounts are excellent, so I'm traveling in 1st Class. Better seat to sleep in... See y'all there!
