4.01 Two Swords

Her journey is also getting a formulaic. I make this the fourth city-state she's about to conquer. She needs to do something different.
I've not read the books or seen this episode yet, but isn't this true of all charismatic rulers (or dictators.) When they take power it is on a wave of goodwill and patriotic ferver. It doesn't take much time for them to put a few steps wrong, and to take their eyes off the ball, for that to change. Same is true of politicians - look at the steep rise and falls of the popularity of Thatcher and Blair. I expect the Mad King was once loved.

At least she has Dragons!

Twitter is awash with spoilers for this show. A teacher of an unruly class is reported to control his pupils by threatening to write who dies on the blackboard. I was thinking to myself that the only character who cannot die in this show is Daenerys due to her control of the Dragons. So, do you think that scene with the Dragons misbehaving was put there just to dispel that idea. No character is safe from the mighty pen of GRRM.

And why do I always refer to him as Prince Charming from Shrek? Same hair, same face, same characteristics... surely too coincidental?

I laughed out loud when I read this. I hadn't noticed it until I read your post, but I think your spot on. :)

Oh, I heartily hate both versions of Ygritte. I'm not sure which one is more annoying, frankly...

Not a huge fan of either myself, but I think I prefer the TV version.

I thought it was a decent episode. I really like who they cast for Oberyn. I'm very much looking forward to his storyline.

I'm waiting for him to "Hello. My name is Oberyn Martell. You kill my sister. Prepare to die."

Last year, I went to a house warming party and the new homeowner put out the blue and white name tags that are printed... "Hello. My name is..." I admit that I rushed over and was the first one to put on a name tag. Within minutes, I was commenting during her tour... "When we reach the bridal suite, I'm going to kill myself." "You could put in a skylight... I'll explain and I'll use small words so that you'll be sure to understand, you warthog faced buffoon." "Your kids are headed into the fire swamp." "I see you have a dog of unusual size." "Here's your glass of wine... All right. Where is the poison? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both drink, and find out who is right... and who is dead." "Come upstairs and see the master bedroom. I promise I will not kill you until you reach the top." "A toast! To your health... No! To the pain."

I've not been invited back.

Ah.... the good old days of the YADL. I think Aegon or Wiggum started it after my snuggle-tooth comments. But I must admit that she came across much better on the show.

I also find myself liking Jamie Lannister even though he's a thoroughly nasty character. What is it that makes me think this? And will he end up with Brienne? Seems highly unlikely, but there is a chemistry betwen them - but is that just because they are both excellent swordsmen/women? And why do I always refer to him as Prince Charming from Shrek? Same hair, same face, same characteristics... surely too coincidental?

I think it is a testament to good acting and writing that even people who haven't read the books are starting to like Jaime. Without spoiling anything, most people who read the books start to like Jaime after a certain point. It's nice to see that the show was able to do this without the benefit of being inside his head, like readers are in Jaime chapters.
