Picky picky. ;) He was going for "In the beginning was the Word" - "In the beginning was the Switch and Das Blinkenlights" doesn't have the same ring to it. In Stephenson's beginning.

(Though, actually, in the beginning was a sort of word, in that the theories and designs would have preceded the mechanics. The command line of paper (especially if your paper was ruled).)
