I think I got myself confused by remembering that you'd mentioned a mass-market paperback, and I thought the Book Depository one might be old stock of that. But I now realise you said there never was a MMP version. Anyway, I've just ordered it, and am looking forward to reading it.
 
Thanks! The future (possibly far future) mass market situation remains mysterious. Amazon.com lists it as 2075, Amazon.ca as 2024 ... and with that kind of confusion going on, who knows if they will ever print it. You did well to be on the safe side and order the trade paperback.

News on the ebook -- HarperCollins now has it on their schedule for late November or early December!

I assume it will be available in the UK and Canada, too.

So I'm plenty excited about that! Now if they can just get the dates for the (alleged) mass market edition sorted.
 
And they have now fixed the release date for the mass market edition to read January 2015 (instead of 2075) at amazon.com. But amazon.ca still says 2025. And 2 to 3 weeks to ship! Quicker to buy it from the US, and probably not much more expensive.
 
But wait ... there is more (and less gratifying) news. Now I'm told that the whole thing about the mass market was a mistake, there will be no mass market and they'll be removing it from Amazon. Clearly these people are out to drive me mad. So it's the trade paperback or the ebook, and that's it.
 
That's too bad. The Canadian site still shows the mass market preorder and no trade paperback. I will have to wait to see if they actually put stock up here. Doesn't look like it.

Finally news of The Queen's Necklace in the UK. The trade paperback will be in stock October 27. No word on the ebook.
 
I'd rather have the ebook -- I've got used to reading on the Kindle, I'm sorry to say -- but if that's delayed, it's good to hear that the paper one will soon be with us. :)

(It'll help make the wait for The Gnome's Engine more bearable.)

The trade paperback will be available in the UK in three days. (At last!) It's the ebook that comes out in December.

Even though amazon.ca is still listing the mass market for pre-order (so embarrassing if they have to give people back their money) it's gone from amazon.com so I guess it really was somebody's mistake.

If the other editions did fabulously well, I suppose there could be a mass market paperback in about a year, but no guarantee even then.

The book was "orphaned," which is what they call it when the editor leaves the company for a job elsewhere. And what that usually means is that no one there at the publishing house cares very much what happens to the book. There is no one to advocate for it in terms of publicity, future editions, etc. I've had books orphaned before (I seem to be the poster child for orphaned books) but there was always someone left who was invested in the book in some way, so it worked out much better than these things usually do. This time it doesn't look like I am going to be so lucky. Probably everyone who was there when the book was published the first time is long gone.

So asking at HarperCollins why the e-book for TQN is not mentioned at amazon.co.uk, I discovered that my contract specifically says they can't sell the book in the British Commonwealth or Ireland or South Africa. So now that the matter has come to their attention, they're interested in doing an amendment to my contract that will allow that. Going by how long it took to send me the original amendment, that could take weeks. Five minutes to do the boilerplate, I'm sure, but weeks to pass through all the different departments and the inboxes on everyone's desks.

I don't know how long (or even if) this will delay the e-book's availability at sites like amazon.co.uk. Maybe not at all, since by the time the book is ready to be sold in the US they should have the amendment, and with the book already formatted it should just be a matter of telling amazon where they'll be selling it. I guess. But who knows how these things actually work?
 
Obviously the people that do it have the sketchiest idea. In my experience lots of giant companies may be no more expert than a tiny company and perhaps only have one or two experts. After all skill and expertises isn't really additive, no Company is more expert than their best expert.
 
Hi @Teresa Edgerton , I see the Kindle version is available on Amazon but the price tag is quite high hey? 11.83 US

I will probably order the PB from .ca in January (I'm not buying anything until Christmas is over at this point!)
 
Yes, I've noticed that the price is high. I don't know why, and of course I have no say in the matter.
